Well, I made my mother a cake for her B-day. It was kinda simple but cute. Unfortunately, it did not appear to be cooked all the way.
It looked like it was done when I leveled it. Maybe I put in the fridge too quick and it became moist due to the foil. I don't know! I was attempting to make a 8' round two layer pound cake. I checked with my fellow CC'ers and was informed that I should follow the same cook times for the pans. Where did I go wrong?
To make matters worse, I'm suppose to make cakes for my two little ones birthdays 7/30 & 8/6, my husbands b-day 8/17 and my SIS baby shower in Oct. I slipping fast.
I'm thinking of backing out of everything while theres still time. ![]()

DON'T GIVE UP! One "oops" doesn't make you a failure! I'm not sure what happened with your cake, but I'm sure another CCer will have the answer.
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're traveling seems all uphill,
When the world is dragging you down a bit,
Rest if you must but DON'T YOU QUIT!!!
(Can't remember the author of that, but it wasn't me

I had that happen to me once.(with a box cake) I don't know what you did it with but sometimes box cake don't always want to work with you, you just try ,try again. I have made so many mistakes on my first few cakes that I have thought well maybe this is not for me. But when I do a great cake it just feels soooo good. So I say if you like it just keep on going and when you have been doing this for 20 years you can tell everyone "when I first started doing cakes I had my fair share of disasters" that is what I plan to do.
Angie,
Please don't be discouraged! We have all had disasters from time to time (and still do
!).
As far as the baking time, I never go by the time on the box, the pan, etc. I set my timer for how long I think it will take and that is when I start checking it -- I use the toothpick test (or with tall cakes, the skewer test!). After a while, you will know your cake is done simply by the smell. I remember someone telling me that many years ago and I thought they were crazy!!
Keep your chin up and keep cakin'!!!
Don't give up! I just got a new oven and it is killing me! I cannot figure out how to work it! I was baking a cake today and it turned itself off?!!!? I set what I thought was an alarming timer. It said bake time. . .My oven turned itself off about 10 min too early and I had a raw blob in the middle. I was gonna fix it up so I would have a pic to post on here. I just chunked it down the garbage disposal and said to hell with it! Hang in there!!

Hi Angie! Please don't give up on yourself!!! Most of us have had mishaps with one or more of our cakes. The important thing is to vent here on CC and try again!
What you experienced could have been caused by several things. Did you check your layers before you took them out of the oven to make sure they were done? You can use the faithful toothpick test, or make sure that the sides of the cake have pulled slightly away from the pan and the top is a nice golden color. Maybe the temperature of your oven was just a little off. Or maybe the pan had more batter in it than you usually use. Also, I use the bake times in recipes as guidelines. Sometimes cakes are done sooner, some need a few extra minutes. ... Just some ideas...
Depending on your schedule, you still have a small window of time to practice making another cake before your next one is due on 8/6. And if you don't need it for family & friends, you can always donate it, such as to your favorite local market (the workers would love it during break time!), or you can slice it and bring it to area gas stations (they'd enjoy a homemade treat, too!). Your mail carrier would appreciate it, too, or maybe you could bring it to a hospital for the staff to munch on when they have a spare moment.
Anyway, as you can see, we all want you to keep baking! So hope you give it another try & come back & let us know how it works out for you. We're behind ya all the way!
Best wishes to you!!!

Sorry you are having trouble with your new stove, but it gave me a good chuckle
. We have bake time on our stove...we got it about a year ago...and I love that feature. It's great when you have little ones and you are home without other adults. When it's a lazy day and I'm making tv dinners (or something as yummy), I always set it on Bake Time. That way if I get sidetracked...changing diapers, cleaning paint off the carpet, etc...our meal doesn't burn! Once you get the stove figuired out you'll love it! Of course, my husband still can't set the timer ![]()
After a while, you will know your cake is done simply by the smell. I remember someone telling me that many years ago and I thought they were crazy!!
That is so true. I don't even use timers anymore. People say they love the smell of the kitchen and I dont' even smell it at all ..... until the cake or cookies are ready to come out of the oven. Then I know they're done.
