Can anyone tell me the guidelines for how much batter you are supposed to use for round pans. Is there a general rule?

General rule is to fill pans 1/2 - 2/3 of the way full. Different recipes will vary on how much they rise, so you might have to play around with it. I can't seem to get to the Wilton site right now, but in the wedding cake section they have a chart that gives you the amount of batter in cups for each size pan, to help you plan.

Here's what I go by, hope it helps.

6in 2 cups
8in 3 1/2 cups
10in 5 1/2 cups
12in 7 1/2 cups
14in 10 cups
16in 13 3/4 cups

These are for rounds. I don't really remember where I got this from, but it seems to work for me. K'ly ^,,^
