Can you stamp the squares in pink food colouring on to a fondant base? It won't be 3D but you will get the square effect.

Well, you could cut them out of any food-safe material, like foam, meat trays, or, Wilton makes them:

http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=130CA091-475A-BAC0-5B672380C281C583

They are made of a foam material similar to the fun-foam stamps that you can get at craft stores. I have no idea, however, if fun-foam is food-safe (I kind of doubt it.)

You could even use a potato stamp. Remember cutting shapes out of half a potato and making potato prints? You'd have to dry the potato really well first, and maybe try some samples to make sure it works.

I can't wait to see your finished cake!

You could do a mosaic technique, trace your pattern (squares) with a veining tool and paint every other one pink. Use royal icing for mortar around the squares.

Wow - it would take ages to freehand all that detail on the picture panel!

I think an edible image would probably be the easiest, this opinion coming from someone who has personally never used one...(sorry) but with that amount of detail, well...

If you feel comfortable painting it, then you can certainly use thinned-down pink food colouring.

Good luck - it's beautiful, and so, I'm sure, will be your cake.
