First Cake That Made Me Cry!

Hi all,
Oh boy...I knew it would eventually happen, but I though I was prepared with this cake enough to get it to look the way I had envisioned. It definitely didn't come out the way I wanted. During the construction I just started crying because it seemed that everything I touched made it look worse. This was the first cake I didn't even want to deliver. The 7 year old it was for was so excited, and Mom thought it was great too, so that made me feel a little better. I know we are all our own worst critics, but how do you get over a bad cake? I haven't been able to look at the pictures until today (4 days later).

I think it looks great. If you had problems I can't tell. It's hard when a cake doesn't come out the way you envisioned. That happened to me with my DS's cake (which I dropped the top layer after I was all done and had to redo at 8pm the night before the party).
Oh my goodness! It's awesome. Go easy on yourself. I don't even know what you are talking about. That was a great job! I can't even imagine attempting a sculpted cake like that!
I think it looks awesome. My 7 year old grandson would love it too.
I think your cake look's great! And remember, through the little boy's eyes- That is the most magnificent cake he has ever seen! ![]()
i showed my 9 y/o son the pic and he said. . . Oh cool!Optimus Prime! sp?We all get atleast one cake that just whips us. You did a great job on it! You are right, we are our own worse critics!

It may not be quite how you envisaged, but the end result is fantastic!!!
We are our own worst critic! I remember the first Barbie cake I made for my niece. I wanted to throw it away. She was five and she didn't see the big gaps in the back where the cake started to crack. I still see her gently patting her Barbie's hair and smiling....along with all her friends and family loving it!
Remember that the birthday boy was happy and mom too! My son [when I show him the picture] will probably want that for his birthday!!
GREAT JOB!!!! ![]()
I agree with everyone who say we are our own worst critics..I had a cake instructor give me the best advice of all in my advanced wilton course (years ago) that I will never forget...Never point out ur mistakes and remember every cake has at least one flaw or more. The client or customer very rarely sees the flaw(s) because most of the time they do not have the trained eyes us cake decorators do...I think ur cake was fantastic...I decorate for a living and any customer of mine would be elated to have a cake like that for a young boy
you said it st we are our worst critics it looks great
Thanks so much for all the kind words. Hopefully I can learn from the mistakes I made on this one and make my next cake that much better.
Just as a side note: My huband is so sweet...he saw me tearing up and decided to take my cake box (in this case a 14 in square box from an office store...couldn't find anything to fit this cake) and decorate it so it had a "trap door" that had to be pulled down, which had "Open at your Own Risk" on it and had it so it looked like it was a package sent by Optimus Prime (the transformer the cake is modeled after). It was really sweet...and the little guy was so excited about opening the box for all his friends at the party. Definately upped the "wow" factor a bit for me.
