Several of the craftier people at work have requested a class for basic cake decorating after seeing/tasting some of my work. Some future decorators waiting to be born!
Other than smooth icing, basic piping like shells and dots, torting and filling, what should be included in this class?
Also, I'll need to give them a list of supplies, but don't want to overwhelm them. I'll point out that they can buy the Wilton Caddy with a 40% coupon at Michael's, but what would be the minimum needed for a class/to decorate at home?

1. Turntable or lazy susan
2. Small angled spatula
3. Bench scraper for smooth icing sides
4. Long serrated knife for torting, or Wilton torting tool
5. Medium angled spatula
6. Piping bags, regular or disposable, their choice
7. Icing bag and tip
8. Recipes for cakes, fillings, icing
9. Basic round, star tips, rose and leaf tips
10. Coupler

Have I missed anything?

I'll be providing cake circles, colors, and instructions.

Also, does anyone have an outline of a basic class that they find helpful. I don't want to act like I know it all, but I don't want to overwhelm them, either.

Thank you for your input. I'm kind of nervous. I can teach nurses how to pack a wound, place an IV, etc., but for some reason, teaching them to decorate a cake is making me nervous!

Try pming NEWTOCAKEDECORATING, she wrote an excellent outline teaching program when she started teaching. She loves helping members out if she is not too busy at the time thumbs_up.gif

We have several Wilton Instructors on here that will help you also...they are super nice members and love to help...hopefully, they will see your thread icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome to CC...enjoy thumbs_up.gif

I would add a 10 inch cake pan. It is a good size to use for decorating and I use mine for a lot of other recipes, too.

Instead of the tool caddy, have them buy the course 1 kit. That has spatula, 2 featherweight bags, basic tips, 2 disposable bags and the practice board. The practice board might not have the picture templates but, I'm sure you can make copies of what you want them to practice. Pan, leveler, bigger offset spatula, extra couplers, and bags, and of course their colors and turntable. Oh, yes, extra bowls to mix their colors are also helpful. One more thing, are you going to demonstrate making stiff, medium and thin frosting?

Yeah, I would suggest demonstrating how to make the icing and showing them the three different consistencies.
