I have the instructions and have done this before so I am not nervous about making the cake itself. I am worried about the lines. When I have done this in the past my hand is shaky and my lines look funny. This is for an important person and I want it to be perfect. Has anyone tried making the lines in a clay gun with fondant and laying them on the cake iced in buttercreme? If not buttercreme I suppose I could do fondant. Anyone tried that? Let me know your thoughts? Thank you for your help!

I'm sure you could do the strings in fondant. It would probably look really good...but take FOREVER!! I've done two 3D spiderman cakes and I think the next time I would do fondant with buttercream lines. I didn't do the bust though, I made a crawling spidey, but boy what a pain in the a** getting the lines into all his cracks!

Clay guns are hard to use. I have ended up putting my clay gun in a caulk gun (used in paint and home repair). Makes the squeezing eaiser and faster.

Whwn you think about it, buttercream is always under fondant

I have done a 3-d spiderman and also had troubles with the lines
I had thought maybe next time finding black string licorice. Although I seem to only find red or purple.
Not sure if using licorice would be easier or not,as it could be more time consuming??? Just my thoughts...

I just made this cake over the weekend for my son's 5th birthday. I too was a bit worried about piping the black lines. I used MMF on the entire cake... It took longer but it was well worth it.
