Hello
I would like as many advices as you guys can about
how to bake a cake?
How to make the fondant figure and when can I make them? Fishes, octopus, crabs, corals etc. the party is this saturday? I am making an under the sea theme and I would like to know if a bag of already made fondant would be better since I have no much time.
Do I color the fondant the same way I color the icing?
I should be able to work it out like playdough right?
Thank you!!!
Have you ever baked a cake before? If not, you sure have chosen a rather industrious project for your first!
IMHO, if you really are inexperienced, your child's first birthday is not the time to suddenly decide to make an elaborate cake. HOWEVER, if you are determined to try, the easiest way to bake a cake is to just use a boxed cake mix. As for the fondant figurines, you should definitely start now as they can be rather time consuming. If you are going to allow them to dry hard, pastillage may be better as it dries faster. Working with fondant or pastillage is like working with clay or playdough. You color them by kneading in a bit of the gel color at a time. Or you can wait until the pieces are completely dry and then paint them with a mixture of the gel color and vodka (the vodka evaporates). Good luck!
I don't know. If this is your first cake decorating project, I would reccomend getting those little plastic toys, instead of making the figures out of (unless you are afraid of a choking hazard).
But, you can still try. Do you want the figures to be something eaten? I don't think pastillage is very tasty. You could try modelling chocolate. It's very easy to make (just chocolate and corn syrup), but I don't know how stong it is or if it will melt. If eating them isn't a priority and you'd rather have people gawk at your figures, gumpaste or pastiallage is probably the way to go.
Gumpaste can be rolled thinner and worked on longer than pastillage. And, not very sure of how you go about making the figures.
Hope this helped.
Good Luck,
Alex
