Applying Icing Images To A Cake Questions
Decorating By CoutureCakeCreations Updated 24 Jul 2007 , 4:29pm by giggysmack
I have never used edible images and have a few questions
1. Do you smooth the top of the cake before or after applying.
2. will you be able to see the edges of the image (if the background is white and so is the icing).
what do i use to smooth the image onto the cake.
any info would be helpful.
thanks,
Sweet Centerpieces
Hi - the following is my experience:
1. Do you smooth the top of the cake before or after applying. <smooth before applying>
2. will you be able to see the edges of the image (if the background is white and so is the icing).
what do i use to smooth the image onto the cake.
Have fun!
Hi!
1. I usually do both so the image is nice and flat. I use a crusting buttercream, so I smooth the entire cake, dab a little bit of water (I moisten a paper towel) where the image is to go, then apply it. I wait a couple of minutes and then smooth it over with a roller (Melvira method).

2. Yes, you can see the edges. Most likely the image won't print all the way to the edge and most people add a bc or fondant border around the edges of the image.
3. You can use your the melvira method which is excellent or the viva method.

I agree with everything Rezzy said, but just wanted to add how very important it is to smooth before you place the image. The first one I ever did, I didn't smooth very well thinking it wouldn't matter. It was horrible!!! You can see the little imperfections underneath if it is not smoothed well.
Good luck! I love edible images!
Yes you do need to smooth your icing all the dents will show through the picture. Try to smooth your picture onto the cake romoving any air bubbles you only have a short time to do this though before the image starts to soften. I find it is best to apply the image the night before and let it rest and melt into the icing this will make your edges almost dissapear maybe even totally
