I am vacationing in Australia (my husband is from there and all his family are here) - and I have been asked by my brother in law to make a cake for my sister in law for her birthday while I am here. I have managed to bake the cake part OK but in trying to make icing, I am not findgin the product that I need to use for shortening. They have this refridgereated vegetable shortening but eveyone says you are supposed to melt it before using.

Does anyone know what kind of shortening I need to buy in Australia to use in my icing? I want it to crust so I need to have it - plus I am using the crusting cream cheese recipe.

Thanks guys - I know someone out there can help!

what about just using butter/icing & van essence?

u can buy commercial veg. shortening, but supermarkets won't stock this.

PS: I am actually in Australia so can help with local suppliers if you like.

I am currently in WA (Perth) and I was wondering if Frymasta would work instead of Crisco - I need to make the icing tomorrow morning so any more advice would be helpful!

Thanks,
Sabrina

P.S. - I think in order for the cream cheese icing to crust properly I need to shortening in it, that is why i don't want to omit it.

I wouldn't use Frymasta... I am in Perth also...

here are some cake supply companies:

Major Cake decorations in Victoria Park (just 5 mins south of Perth)
Cake Tins n Things in Balcatta (about 10 mins north of Perth)

Either of these companies will have what you are looking for. Australian cake making is quite different to American. when we make cream cheese icing it's usually soft and put on carrot cake/banana cakes... so you will need to explain clearly to them

Sorry, cant be of more help

Australians don't use vegetable shortening as the basis for their buttercream like the Americans do; buttercream to an Aussie home cook is all-butter only. This is why you can't find it in the supermarket fridge. Frymasta, Copha and the other one (can' t think of its name right now), are for exactly that: frying. Try to make buttercream and they taste yukky. There is a product available from speciality cake dec stores called, "So Lite"; this is the equivalent and makes a white buttercream that has all the usual purposes that Americans use it for.
