I have to share a funny story about my brother. We were camping this weekend, sitting around the fire, and he says "I could kick your butt making cakes". icon_confused.gif I said, "Oh really, do you wanna have a cake-off?" He says, yeah, he'd love to. He says he'll show me. So I asked him to pick a theme, I'd bake my cake at my house and even DELIVER it to his house, then we can have friends and family over, and they can judge. He said fine, and we agreed on a halloween theme. He wife looks at him and says, "Honey, have you ever even baked a cake??" icon_rolleyes.gif He said he could. He is so funny. Then he says he may have to borrow some pans. I said...oh no, those pans just didn't magically appear in my house, I had to buy them, but maybe I could RENT him some pans. He just laughed. Funny thing, I don't think he even realizes he has to have bags, tips, coloring, etc. icon_lol.gif

My brother and I are pretty close, so this should be a fun adventure for us! We don't have a date set yet, but I'll keep you posted how it turns out! thumbs_up.gif

OOOOH, we should tell Food Network. Sounds like something they'd like to tape!! I'm itching to find out what happens.

One word of advice: Never underestimate your opponent! There are tons of halloween candies to use for decorations, and lots of women's mags with tons of cute Halloween treat suggestions.

Sounds like fun!!!! Don't under estimate him, I was having trouble covering a square cake with fondant this weekend and my dh came in and did it, he has never made a cake so I was floored!
Don't forget to let us know how it goes please, I can't handle all of the posts on CC that leave us hanging icon_confused.gif

Oh, I'm sure he'll do pretty well. He is a perfectionist in everything he does. I'm thinking he'll just keep doing it until he gets it perfect. It's all in good fun though!! icon_biggrin.gif

Brothers can be so much fun, can't they? My brother is so much older than me that we didn't really get close until just a few years ago, but I adore my husbands brothers. They are a hoot!

That sounds like fun! Nothing better than a planned battle between siblings to take ya back to waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when. That made me giggle...thinking about my brother.

I must admit, the best birthday cake I ever had was one that he made for me. Oh my goodness! I still get teary-eyed thinking about it.

Televise it live on the internet! Sell passes for it!

OK, the time is nearing, so I"m bumping this up because I need some great ideas from my CC friends! I think my brother has BIG ideas, and frankly I'm getting a little nervous. icon_redface.gif I need many ideas that people will be "wowed" by! Please....start the suggestions!!

How about something around the Iron Chef theme? Do up two kitchens with icing, and cake batter flying everywhere. Pictures (maybe fondant) of you and your brother, hair messy, icing everywhere. How about a snowball fight, there are two forts, you guys are throwing cakes at each other instead of snowballs?

Here's a link to a Halloween/Birthday cake that Vicki C posted. I think it is a really cool cake.

If I was to advise your brother, I would suggest the monster cakes from Debbie Brown's 50 Easy Cakes Book. They really adorable and very easy to make. I'm sure I've seen them posted on CC.

Those are super cute ideas! My brother picked a Halloween theme though. I'm trying to think of something unique, yet somewhat skilled. I thought of doing a haunted house thing, graveyard next door, etc, but I think he may be doing a haunted house, so I'm looking for something different, that people wouldn't expect.

******I'm keeping the snowball fight tucked away for a winter cake!!!********

Ok, one more idea. Need a sense of humour. Crap, I lost it (not the sense of humour, my idea) ... ummm....OK got it again. How about somebody sitting down at the table eating a piece of chocolate cake, on the corner of the table, have an open bar of ex-lax. Have the baker in the background with a halo around her head, make her out to be an angel.
PS. Sorry, if this post offends anybody. I know that my brother would get a kick out of it. Mind you, he's a little off.

Throw Down...Big Brother Style! icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif ...sorry...couldn't resist!

I like the haunted house/graveyard theme...you could make cute headstones that mocked your brother's cooking ability.

Good luck..and be sure to keep us posted!

ttatummm,

You're so right. That's just an amazing halloween cake. Soooo much exquisite detail.

I know there's a Jack Skelton wedding cake on CC, but I searched and couldn't find it. That was a great cake too, and would also fit the bill for a Halloween bake-off.

Was wondering if these cakes were going to be judged on appearance only (like the cake challenges) or taste also.

Sounds like so much fun, and YUMMY, so much cake!!!

Jan - I couldn't open the link you posted.

I've looked through the halloween gallery, and have had some ideas, but I really want to make sure I explore every option here icon_wink.gif
Also, the cakes should be judged on appearance AND taste. Probably creativity, etc. Everyone on CC is welcome to come an judge! judge.gif

In the 2006 Wilton Yearbook there is a very cute 4tier stacked halloween cake. It's a set of stone steps with a red carpet runner and cookie people (witch, frankenstien, werewolf, mummy, etc....)

I am making that one this year only instead of the flat cookie people (they look cheesy to me) I am making 3d little kids in costumes with Trick or Treat bags. Not very hard at all, already finished the witch.

Would love to see the pix when you are done with the contest. I am doing the 2006 cake for my son's wedding next year. But with gp people. The bride loves Halloween time. And that is the day they are going to exchange their vows. I am having fun with this one. Off the subject - I am back now I have two brothers who would do the same challenge if they hadn't been around when I did them at home. They know better than to challenge me in this love of mine. icon_biggrin.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Well, I have a sad update. My brother called me today and left this long message about how today was dooms day for me, because he just left Walmart and bought all his supplies. He said this was my last chance to back out! Well, I called him at home a couple hours later to see how the baking was going. He said it was going well, but "Um, how do you get the cakes out of the pan without crumbling?". So, I told him he should wait almost exactly 10 minutes, any shorter or longer, he could have trouble with it sticking. He said he already had one made, but he was baking the other one. He went and bought a pan, tips, bags, coloring, everything he needed. So, I was excited about it, and went back to work. Well, when I got off of work about 3 hours later, there was a text message on my phone that said..."Why don't we just call off the cake-off. My cake isn't really working out.". So, then I was sad and called him to see what the problem was. I thought I could help him out a little if it wasn't that big of a deal. Turns out he was stacking 4 cakes to make a haunted house, and it kept tipping over. He said the bottom looked good though. Well, I never saw his cake, but now they are eating it, and the cake-off is off icon_sad.gif
