How do you get the flowers to stay on the wire? I just got the wilton flower cutter book and set today and it talks about using the wire to make like a garland of flowers for your cake. So I got the wire (24g) and some florist tape to use along with the book. I did well with the flowers and preping the wire with the tape. Even added a little water on the flowers so they would stick to the wire, but they keep falling off. The flowers I practiced with arent that big at all (baby's breath, rose buds, and tiny carnations). They dont wiegh that much. So how is it they wont stay on the wire?

(I tried it with both gumpaste and fondant, and they same thing happens with both)

Try heating up the tip of the wire over a candle... before it loses it's heat, gently thread the flower on. The heat will "melt" the flower into place. It needs to be quick & careful... if you take too long from heat to flower, it wont work as the wire cools down quite quickly. you shouldn't need to tape it with florist tape if the wire is already covered.

Hope this helps.

PS: am assuming the type of flowers you are working with are "life like" flowers for this method.

Yes they are the life like type. Shaded and all. You said "covered wire"? I did notice that the wire was covered in the picture but I thought is was from the tape. Can you buy the wire covered? I didnt see any while I was in Micheals today.

Hmm... I'm in Australia, and all floristry/ cake decorating wire is pre-covered... thought it would be same in the US.

If you have bare wire, I would suggest to cover it first, and then heat, then thread.

some floral wire is bare, some is covered with cloth. i still use floral tape, bu only after the flower is made and dried. it makes a better finished presentation.

I use an egg wash as "glue" - I dip the end of the wire in, wipe off the excess, insert it into the flower, and work the flower onto the wire. sometimes you need a small hook on the end of the wire too. it just takes practice.

Also, are you making a little loop at the end of the wire? That made all the difference for me.
