A smash cake is typically done for a first birthday. It is a smaller sized cake for the birthday boy/girl to dive into. It is so cute!

It is a cake made for a 1st birthday it usually is a mini replica of the big cake but doesn't have to be, it is like a one layer 5" mini cake, at least that's the size I would make it
here's an example by brendanne

For the first birthday you bake a cake just for the birthday girl/boy...the Smash Cake. It usually ends up smashed everywhere. lol It matches the cake made for everyone else to eat at the party.

I did a smash cake for my daughter's first birthday (a mini Elmo). For my son's first birthday, I did a 3 tier cake and the top tier was his "smash cake". icon_smile.gif

A girl I did classes with said in her family they called them "BOX" cakes!

They put the Birthday baby in a box in the middle of the dinning table and put the cake in with them! icon_lol.gif Everybody gathers around and watches baby make a mess and then.....drum roll please....box and baby get carried to the bathroom for the birthday bath! icon_lol.gif I love it!

So is smash cake a regional thing like grooms cake?

What no face thing? This must be a rule that I need to know (I have small children too)! Can you let me know what you mean...is it your rule or a CC rule?

Yeah no photos with faces in the regular forums. This is to protect us, our clients, and our children/families from the "spiders" that search the web to find pictures and content for search pages. If you absolutely have to share the adorable photos of your family vacation or your baby with their smashed smash cake you need to do it in the lounge. Speaking of which-- I am going to go start a smash cake thread cuz I think it would be fun!! Look in the lounge I will title it... Babies get smashed... icon_lol.gif

i make smash cakes for kids under 12 i think there fun, i started this because my cousins husband always and i mean always smashes his kids head into the cake, now this is after they are running around full of sweat and dirt yuck so this year i made them smash cakes so no one else would have to eat the cake that had been smashed, and my mom liked it so much she encourage me to give them to all kids, i usually don't spend that much time on them, they match the cake, they are 6 inch cakes and cost me 2.00 to make and my customer think they are so cute.

I think "smash" cakes would be great for any age! I'm not a germophobe but I don't like the idea of people blowing out candles and spreading germs all over the cake. With my family I usually cut a slice off and put the candle on their own piece. Especially during cold and flu season.

Am I the only one who thinks is is horrible for a parent to smash a kid's head into their birthday cake? That just soundsso mean.

To me a smash cake is for a small child.

I think it is awful too! But I also hate when brides and grooms do it to each other. We let each child smash the cake into their own face.

At my parties no one smashes anybody's face in a face, the baby smashes the cake him or her self.

I advertise on my site and offer a special for the 1st birthday and give the smash cake for free. I find that most parents are thrilled about this. Around here people usually only do it for the 1st birthday so, it's not that big of a deal. It's usally a small 6" cake that is simply decorated to go along with the theme. I have done a farm/tractor cake and the smash cake was a pig face. I have one this week for a pool party and the smash cake is going to be a beach ball. It's so fun to see a sweet child just covered in chocolate cake!! icon_lol.gif
