Here it is.. The cake I stressed so many over (especially the cake originator Bjfranco, thankyou and Monica, thankyou)
My journey...
I got an order for this cake last Saturday. I had never carved into a cake or made MMF and this is my experience.. I made the mmf on thursday let it sit over night and formed the traffic cones on friday(which look like carrots, I made them too large). This was interesting. The mmf turned out very well to my suprise and tasted fine ( I couldve handled it even sweeter!) I got nervous when I was rolling it out because even though I put confectioners sugar on the mat and rolling pin, it still managed to stick some so I had to re-knead it more and make the cone shape which was weird to do. I used a coke/pepsi bottle cap to get the base shape which I found great to use! Anyhow, what I couldnt figure out was how to get all the sugar off the colored mmf and that drove me crazy.(Any pointers?) I let the cones sit on a plate while I baked all the cakes and made the buttercream dream icing for the first time and I loved that too. Very good. Then I stacked the cakes and pondered about two hours how to carve into the cake, I just could not visualize it and once I started carving I got extremely nervous, but managed it to my suprise once more. The second layer carving took 5 minutes.I lost alot of time there. Then I put a crumb coat on. Then iced the whole thing. Then the road was my next challenge. I got a ton of sugar on the black road and used a lightly damped papertowel to wipe it off (any other methods?) Then I rolled the fondant and cut it into three sections to lay it on and around the cake. I applied it by mixing powd. sugar and little water to make it adhere to the bc icing. I dont know if this was the right technique but it worked for me. I thought it was looking too sloppy until I got to pipe the grass and it hid alot of gaps and errors I made. Some places of the road was wider or thinner than others but the grass cover it. It was starting to look real good after that. Then I put the cars on, piped the border around and stripes on the road. The last thing was adding the cones and flags which was made of black and white cardstock and lollipop sticks! And that was it. Just thought I would share and give a shout out to everyone who helped.HOLLAR!! I have to do another for the 30th so now I have some experience. The things I would change is to make the cones smaller and to round off the ruff edge a bit better. I made it too pointy! THANKYOU ALL!
I love it! You did a great job!
By the way, since you asked about the road, I used chocolate buttercream tinted black to do my road in my "cars" cake. It worked out very well. tasted like chocolate. No funny taste since i didn't have to use so much black.
Subaru--did you make a full batch of chocolate buttercream? I have not made a shocolate buttercream cake which is odd for me because I love chocoalte everything! I just used the buttercream dream and that was delicious. I will have to try that though. Yep, the road was challenging, I didn't have to use that much black as I thought I would have to. I am sure it didn't taste that great though!
