I need a cake idea for a school auction-- any cake! Keep in mind, the auction will be mostly teachers on a "teachers salary". I have open range ofr the taste, size, design.. you name it!

Doctored mixes would be a great way to keep cost down. I personally love the doctored chocolate with raspberry jam filling and SMBC. Ganache (whipped for the filling and glaze for the frosting) would also be an inexpensive route. You could get 3-6" rounds out of one box, torte and there you have it.

There are so many wonderful pictures here. Do a search for teach. As a teacher myself, I would like any one of these. I guess it also depends on the grade level.

I don't think teachers are as poor as all that. icon_lol.gif

How about carving an apple with a worm coming out of it?

Depends on your idea of poor. Go to any district's website and look at salary schedule. I have 10 yrs experience and just hit 40,000 this year. That's sad!! PLus teachers spend so much of their own $ on their class. So I appreciate the respect for a teacher's wallet!

What grade level?

I teach high school math. I would/do support fundraisers and expect to pay a pricey dollar for a good cause. (pricey meaning, good price and not bargain basement garage sale price). I would NOT want to buy a fundraiser cake that has a teacher theme (maybe elementary school teachers are different), most likely I would take the cake home to my family. I would want something really pretty that I could possibly take to a friends house that I am going to that weekend. If I'm going to buy more than one, I would like a "WOW" cake that I could give away as a gift to my neighbor...

So I would recommend that you price the cakes accordingly and make them really pretty, put the frosting roses and a nice border, maybe a spray of flowers, etc... Go for cool looking instead of novelty, it will widen your audience.

I would do something for the theme time of the year....Fall leaves and colors, Halloween, Thanksgiving etc. I think a carrot or spice cake with apricot jam and a cream cheese flavored frosting would be of interest and be able to be shared with their family, their class or an upcoming function and dinner etc... Go for a great look!

It's a middle school so it's going to be grades 6,7,8.

So maybe not teaching-themed at all, but something quite the opposite? I agree on a fall theme as well.

Maybe a hazelnut or caramel cake with a mocha buttercream and some pretty fondant leaves? Perhaps a basketweave around the sides? A 1/4 sheet or a 8 or 9 in round?

Aggiedecorator, the customer would kill me if I posted what she makes after 26 years of teaching but I gotta say I have a lot more respect for teachers knowing the crap they have to deal with VS the piddily salaries!

Yeah.........carmel cake with mocha buttercream and fall fondant leaves.....I wanna bid on it!!!!!!

If you were thinking of providing more than 1 cake for the cause....you could have a certificate good for a custom 8" round in the theme and colors of choice!

I didn't mean to hit a nerve with my comment. And I am not sure if this is the place to debate the issue. icon_smile.gif

I served for three terms on my local School Board and dealt with teachers and the public. icon_cry.gif

I appreciated the consideration for the pocketbooks of teachers. There is also the pocketbooks of the community taxpayers to think about as well. thumbs_up.gif

A Fall theme sounds perfect, esp since it's middle school. Both flavors sound delicious. There will be a fight to be highest bidder I'm sure and you're getting to advertise yourself.

Wow, 26 years and still teaching! You know it's for the love of kids and not the pay.

Good luck and don't forget to post your picture!

Hey IHATEFONDANT,
Sorry, I want to keep it pleasant too and I know this is not a place debate but a wonderful place to support each other and the wonderful ways we use our talents to support our community like puppyloveconfections is doing. icon_biggrin.gif I did feel the need to bring awareness to your statement though icon_wink.gif You've served on the board but have you ever walked in a teacher's shoes? All worked out I hope thumbs_up.gif .

I lived Aggie... icon_lol.gif

When I decided not to run again I felt like I had gotten paroled. icon_surprised.gif

BTW..I also served on the local PTA..hosted many..many teachers luncheons and bake every year to support my local PTA fundraisers. icon_biggrin.gif

And it also infuriates me that teachers have to buy supplies for their classrooms out of their own pockets or look to the PTA to buy things they need.

IMO districts need to slim down Administration and concentrate on education.

Last year my Dh and I donated a 36" color TV and a DVD player to our local school. They have an after school program and the kids were watching a 12" black and white TV. The teacher that ran the program had to bring her own DVD player in. icon_confused.gif

You got me started. I am going to cram a freshly baked biscotti in my mouth so that I shut up. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for the kind words.
I hear you! I used live on the Jersey Shore and taxes in my neighborhood were in the $6000's on new construction! Starting salary in my old school district was in the $23K's. Subs can make more than that icon_mad.gif

PUMPKIN ROLLS DO REALLY GOOD! My friend made some for a cake auction at an elem. school, and one of her's went for $26!!! (I think that is how much, can't remember for certain, but I know it was a lot)!!!!!
Most everyone I know loves pumpkin rolls. Most ppl don't want to spend the time to make them, or can't/don't know how!
