I am going to make a two tiered birthday cake for this weekend. I currently have an 8 inch round cake pan. Should I get a 10 inch or 12 inch to go under it? Which would look better? Or should I get a smaller size to go on top of the 8 inch? If so, what size? What will look best?

Also, I would like to do the wiry decorations that I have seen in pics. Do I buy these, or make them? Where, or how?

It will have to depend on how many servings you need the cake to have. This chart will show you the number of servings for different size/shape pans:

That said, I prefer having 4" difference between layers.

the cake will need to serve 30, but leftovers would be ok. i want it to look good. will an 8" round look odd as the top layer? do they make 4" round pans?

what about the wiry decorations?
