I'm attempting to make my very first loopy gumpaste bow. I've just hung them over the broom handle and some of them have surface cracks...they're not breaking but showing cracks? Is this because they're too long? Can you do a bow out of just gumpaste or should I have used fondant or a mix?? Thanks for any ideas.

Maybe you did not roll them thin enough. The weight may be causing them to crack. You could try lying them on their sides instead. I just hate when that happens! Good luck and I hope they hold together for you.

I have been struggling with those also. I started out making my loops out of fonant. Definately didn't work. Took way too long to dry and was "crumbly". Then I tried fondant gumpaste mix. That was not much better. It had a strange texture. (probabaly just me). Finally I tried just gumpaste and rolled it really thin. I cut the most of the loops 6 inches and some 5 1/2 inches and made 20 total. I put them on broomstick with wax paper over it and left them to dry for 12-24 hours. I then slid them off the broom stick and but them in a 6 inch pan to form the bow. I have used candymelts and royal icing for the glue and like both.

After much frustration, I finally made a good bow! Then I got excited and made 3 more! icon_smile.gif My husband wanted to know what I was going to do with all of them. I am sure I will find something to do with them.

Don't give up. It is so much fun when you finally "get it".

Good Luck!!!

P.S.

I made them about 1 inch wide and made some 3/4 inch wide for "fill in" loops.

If you have a pasta machine run your fondant through on number 4, this is a good thickness for bows. If you dont have one just make sure to roll the fondant pretty thin. HTH!!
