Tonight was back to school night, I was going so DH wanted to do something fun with our girls. So before I left, I baked up a couple of little cakes in the microwave. I didn't have time to make frosting since he sprung this idea on me very last minute, but I had a can of white Duncan Hines frosting in the pantry from my pre-cake decorating days.

Got home to MAD kids. The frosting literally tastes like sour chemicals. I have eaten a lot of canned frosting in my lifetime made by Duncan Hines and it did NOT taste like this. icon_mad.gif Nobody could eat this and DH is now wondering if we've all been poisoned. I too tried it before he suggested that.

Duncan Hines has NO phone number, NO e-mail address either! icon_mad.gif They have a snail mail address..... oh boy! I can write them a letter! icon_mad.giftapedshut.gificon_mad.gif Grrrr

After being spoiled with the great taste of fresh buttercream...............all of those tubs of frosting taste "chemically" to me. I don't even like Wilton's ready-made icing. Yuk! AND IT IS CHEMICALS...........

Hey--

Not sure if this will help you, but I pulled out a box of Duncan Hines cake mix I had in the pantry, and there is a phone number on it --

1-800-362-9834

They also have a 'satisfaction guarantee' right above the number stating 'we guarantee your satisfaction with this product. If you have any questions or comments, please call toll free'.

Hope this helps!
Denise

Was there a use by date on the can? If you haven't used canned frosting in a long time, it may have been past the date and spoiled.

You can also go to www.planetfeedback.com and you are able to send complaints, compliments, suggestions, etc., to companies.

It's a great way to let the companies know about issues.

I went through the same thing last night. In a hurry I bought 2 cans, one vanilla, one chocolate of DH. They smelled awful to me, wasn't sure if I should use them at all, but my kids asked for the leftovers and I gave them to them. I asked later if they tasted good, and they said yeah, like why wouldn't they? Soooo, I agree with Phoov, we are just spoiled....

My kids wouldn't touch the icing and they LOVE the canned icing.

Older kid kept asking if I was trying to pawn a new icing recipe off on them.

It doesn't smell bad, but the plastic container it's in sure would taste better. EW EW EW There has to be something wrong with this stuff. It doesn't expire for another year!

My husband will ONLY eat canned frosting. I have tried tons of different recipes on him & he will only eat canned frosting or ganache. I think all canned icing is horrid but I guess it's a matter of taste. His birthday cake I used DH canned frosting & it was so hard to decorate with. My basketweave kept sliding it was so soft.

I also noticed that DH sells an icing with sour cream in it. Did you use that? If so, maybe that's the funny taste??

Nope, this is the Whipped Vanilla frosting. I don't think anyone in this world could eat it, it doesn't taste like frosting at all. It has a metallicky, plasticky taste. It isn't an "off" taste... more like that is SO bad lets all gag now taste. The kids spit it out and were then washing out their mouths with water.

I called the number that Suttle gave and according to them, I must have gotten a bad batch. They think the formula was off and there was too much of one of the stabilizing compounds in it.

CS rep is sending me COUPONS! Oh boy..... don't think I will be using them. No more canned icing around here.

Heeheee...Jorre you crack me up! It must have been pretty bad to make your kids spit it out and wash it down with water! You should save your coupons, you may get a customer like my DH who just loves that stuff! icon_eek.gif

Canned icing, yuck! icon_smile.gif When I taught school part time we had kids bring in cake or cupcakes from home, just like the confetti cake with matching canned icing and I could barely eat it.

It really does taste like chemicals!

However I've actually gotten batches of Crisco that smells like chemicals too. Not sure if they let it get old on the shelf or get too warm and then set up again but once in awhile I get a really smelly can of the stuff. Ugh. Smells like strong chemically plastic.

I hate canned icing to. But I have a great tip, if you have to use a canned icing to decorate you can add powdered sugar (sifted several times) to thicken it up and you can decorate with it. I won't use canned anymore my family found a piece of a broken icing can in a batch of it once. YUCK.

I'm not wild about canned frosting, either. But sometimes, in a pinch, I have to use the vanilla. I add powdered sugar to thicken it up and add liquid flavoring to it(like what you use when you make home-made hard candy). It helps make it taste a lot better.

I forgot one thing..When I first got married my husband loved peppermint patties....AND canned icing. I mixed some peppermint extract (tiny bit) with...I think DH dutch chocolate...and he loved it! Didn't really taste like canned then after I added that.
