OK, this is probably a very stupid question icon_redface.gif , but I have to ask anyway. How many cups of batter are in a prepared box of mix? I'm making a half-sheet (12"x18") cake and using the CC cake extender. I'm just trying to figure out how many boxes of mix I need if I need 14 c. of batter (keeping in mind that part of it will be cake extender)? Because I am so lame at this, could you also tell me how many batches of the cake extender I'd need to get a total of 14 c. of batter???

I'm sorry if this question is so "wordy"--can you tell I'm new at this??? icon_redface.gif

DH boxed mixes have the most prepared batter. Pilsbury has about 2 cups less. 2 boxes of DH with cake extender may put you just shy of the 14 cups. I think DH has 6 cups of cake batter when prepared but I may be wrong.

Duncan's site says 5 1/2...

As for the math on the extender, I'm WAY math-challenged!

But I'd like to know more about extender. How does that work??

I haven't used the extender recipe but depending on the brand of mix you use you will normally get 4-5 c. DH gives you 5c at the most in my experience. I normally just count on 4c. and that way I don't have to worry about not having enough. I don't know how much the extender will add to the base amount but hopefullly this will give you a place to start.

Pillsbury is a joke! I will never buy that brand again. I'm beginning to understand why some just use DH.

It depends on the brand and the flavor. Philsbury and BC usually have 4 to 5 cups of batter. DH has between 5 and 6.

DH butter is 6 cups.
DH white is closer to 5 cups.
DH chocolate is in the middle.

If you doctor the mixes they are going to make different amounts as well.

The best thing to do is as you use a new flavor, measure it out and write that down somewhere so you can use it as a reference. You also want to remeasure ever so often as the companies have a tendency to change their formulas ever now and then.

Thanks for your help, everyone! TexasSugar--that is a great idea. I think I need to start a cake notebook with all the info I learn here and along the way.

When I made my extender, I had 8 cups of batter when all was said and done. So two boxes should be 16 cups. I believe that was with DH
