I'm making a cake for my Granny this weekend and I was wondering if you can make daisies out of butter cream icing. I have only taken the Wilton Course 1 (last class was last night). If you can - do you use medium consistency? And what tip do I need to use?

Thank you!

i am by no means an expert but I dont know if they would stay together when made out of buttercream because of the way the petals are. I just learned how to make them 3 days ago in class 3 of Course II. the petals were made with tip 104 and the center was made withe tip 5.
here is the link to the wilton site instructions

You can, but you would do it directly on the cake. I would make sure you have a good crust too. I LOVE making daisies, but I have not done it on a cake yet, only with royal.

Good luck!

I actually made daisies with white buttercream and let them dry ahead....they were pretty fragile though but they worked and tasted good too, and were not too hard.

I just did daisies in buttercream for a cupcake display. Check out my photos....the leaf tip #104 and a #4 or 5 tip are perfect.

I've made daisies out of buttercream too and they are great. Especially cute on cupcakes!!! I would think that you could freeze them and then place on your cake if you didn't want to pipe them on directly.

I did BC daisies on my mother's day cake. I did them a day of so inadvance and let them dry on a flower former. They were very fragile but they worked great and tasted good to....one suggestion..I put granulated sugar in a small container with 1 drop of yellow food coloring stir it very well ,and wet my finger to place a little in the center of the yellow. It looked very pretty. Check out my photos.

you can make them right on the cake, practice first on a board to get the hang of them. But heres what you would do. Using a tip 104 for the petals you would first make an X so that the center of the flower is centered then fill in the X till the flower is complete, top the center with a tip 5 ball and your good to go.

When forming the petal itself you need to use very little pressure, you are going to point the thin end of your tip to the outside of the flower, then starting slightly off the middle you will move, while using light pressure, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (depends on the size of the flower) away from the center then bring the tip back to the center of the flower cutting off pressure just before hitting the middle.

I'M WITH MONTANAKATE. YOU CAN FREEZE THE BUTTERCREAM DAISIES. WHEN I WORKED IN THE ICE CREAM SHOP WE WOULD MAKE ALL THE FLOWERS UP AHEAD OF TIME AND PUT THEM IN THE FREEZER UNTIL WE NEEDED THEM. DO THEM ON WAXED PAPER SQUARES AND THEN PEEL THE PAPER AWAY WHEN YOU ARE READY TO USE THE DAISIES. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO PUT THEM BEFORE YOU PEEL THE WAXED PAPER, SO THEY DON'T FALL APART ON YOU WHILE YOU ARE TRYING TO DECIDE WHERE THEY NEED TO GO.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm still trying to decide what I want to put on this cake for my Granny. She likes daisies...but I also thought maybe I'd just do swirl flowers...maybe a mixture of both. Argh...I wish I were more creative...

maybe once I'm in Maryland with the cake in front of me, the creative juices will start to flow...

Thanks again!
