iced a different color, I'm not understanding how you get the two different icing right next to each other without mixing.

I would plan on applying a border to hide any mixing or smudging.

I usually do the sides first and then pull the extra icing up over the top in a thin layer. Then I ice the top but I don't do it all the way to the edge. I kind of gradually push it out until it almost meets. Of course you'll need a border.

The other alternative is to reverse the process: do the top first, pull any extra down and then use the icer tip to do the sides. Add border.

Try holding wax paper in place at the edges so that you can peel off the paper and any excess. Assuming you're using crusting buttercream, let the first color dry up a bit before moving on to the next.

I see that you are pretty new. Could you paste a link of an example. I wonder if you are seeing fondant??

I also do the sides and then the top. Use a border to cover up the line where the two colors meet. I also recently did this on the top of the cake.
