I hope this is not a stupid question, but I am new to all this and try to catch as much as I can on the boards when not too busy.

I have seen alot of gorgeous cakes with fondant accents and keep reading how the fondant was cut then painted.

Can someone tell me what kind of color is used to paint the fondant? I believe they are being hand painted not airbrushed, right?

Thanks again for any help you can offer.

Rene

I haven't done a lot of painting on fondant...I usually blend colors into the actual fondant. I have applied extra color to fondant using Wilton icing colors and a paint brush. I've mixed the colors with water, and with vanilla extract, and the extract seems to work better. HTH

I've only tried to do it once and it didn't work out so great for me but I believe people use Wilton paste colors or Americolors and dilute them w/ some alcohol, water, or vanilla or lemon extract and then use a paintbrush to paint on the fondant..........I've read about it, but again I haven't really done it successfully. I think sometimes it leaves things looking a little streaky. I think the people that airbrush their fondant have it come out looking more even...... but I've never worked w/ an airbrush!

You can paint with diluted paste or gel colors (using vodka, lemon extract, or everclear). You can paint with airbrush colors straight from the bottle like you would with watercolors. You can also mix pearl and luster dusts with extract and paint with those.
