Ok, twice recently I have taken cakes into work to share and it doesn't seem to get eaten.... icon_cry.gif

The first time we had a baby photo competition, so I made 9 x 13 cake with an edible image - French Vanilla with Cookies and Cream filling. I was really happy with how it turned out, but it took ages for someone to cut into it and it didn't all get eaten. I'll put a photo of it my photos.

Second time, it was my bosses' birthday so I made 9" round cake. Chocolate with Vanilla butter cream - same deal, took ages for someone to make the first cut and then it didn't all get eaten.....BUT another girl bought in 2 chocolate cakes with choc ganache and strawberries and they both got demolished. Now, both her cakes were fine but not decorated like mine. I asked my best friend her opinion on both mine and hers and she said that the other womans tasted bitter/burnt (I tried it and agreed) and mine was great....but still some was left.

OK, so my question is does anyone here think that sometimes the cake you bring is just too intimidating to cut into....? icon_confused.gif

Sorry to be so loooonnng but its just so damn disappointing

Around my office I have this theory: I have to cut it first. If there is a piece missing, generally everyone else will cut it up. I always send out a message to everyone to eat it and let me know how they liked it. Sometimes it takes 2 days for it to go b/c a lot of the poeple here are watching what they eat.

That happens often to me at potlucks. So I end up being the one to cut it first. once it's cut, everyone wants some. So I suggest that after everyone sees your design, CUT IT!!!! precut for everyone to take a piece, and there'll be none left!!!!

Have fun!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Definitely have to cut it yourself. And sometimes I cut a few more pieces to encourage others. After that, it goes quickly!

agree!! i made a cake for my friend's bday, she works really close. i made a mistake w/the ganache and it was bitter. So i was afraid of giving it to her cause she's preganant. I was not sure where i went wrong. But after reading here and talking to the person who shared the recipe i found out i used unsweetned chocolate. Anyways, the whole day the cake was sitting in the fridge. I then went and bought some store bought icing and slapped it on. left it in the kitchen. everyone was dying for a piece, but they didn't dare. Someone came over and asked me, i said go ahead help yourself and it was gone in a second! people just kept spreading the word of free cake and how good it was. thumbs_up.gif
What also seems to work here is a general email to everyone in our office. My co-workers usually just run when they see those" free food in the kitchen" emails.

I agree, you have to be the first one to cut the cake. At work, I always take a picture and send an email to my "cake fans", a distribtution list of people that love my cakes. They usually come running and the longest a cake has ever lastest is an hour an a half. I cut a few pieces and put them on small snack plates the company provides and that's really all I have to do to get it started. Best of luck to you!

"Free cake" always works, but lots of people are uncomfortable eating the faces in photo cakes.

This happened to me just last night. I made a cute oval cake with a little lake, ducks, palm trees for the first night of our singles bible study. No one wanted to have cake in the beginning so we had to wait for a break to eat it icon_cry.gif Then *I* was the one who said "cake, anyone". I honestly think it would have sat there all night if I wouldn't have said anyone. I totally believe it is because people are either dieting, don't want to be the first one to take some (boy, do I look like a pig), just ate dinner. There's lots of reasons. Of course once I cut my cake everyone wanted some. thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

This has happened several times to me with cake I brought into work. No one wants to be the first to cut it, but once it is cut and you tell everyone they can eat it, the cake is usually gone quickly.

And, many people around here refuse to eat dark colored icing because they don't want it in their teeth or their tongue to turn colors. I don't care how good the cake is, no dark colors around here.

And there are many people here watching their weight.

Well yesterday i went to visit her for the 2nd time since giving her it and there it sat on a shelf on her wall unit like a decoration lol She keeps saying its too pretty to eat. I said "mom its home made no preservatives its going to go green" lol Didnt seem to faze her a bit I bet its still there.

I've had people at work tell me that they were raised not to cut a cake that wasn't already cut into, so I'll usually cut the first piece. But after bringing in a couple of cakes, though, now I usually just put it in the kitchen w/a knife & a sticky note that says "Eat me!" - that usually works. Sometimes I'll send around an email to everybody to let them know it's there. But if I do that and want a piece for myself, I have to go cut it right then or it's gone by the afternoon!

That happens to me too. I recently made a two tiered cake for another cake decorator and she refused to cut the top tier. Saved it for over a month. Just wanted to look at it. You just have to cut it yourself. Then it will disappear VERY fast.

This happened to me recently also. The birthday girl didn't cut the cake I made for her until the cake someone else brought her was gone. She told me that it was too pretty to cut, but eventaully she did cut it. The other cake was still in the pan and only frosted on the top! She wanted them to eat the "cheesy cake" first, before she let them eat mine. I took it as a compliment that she liked my cake so well. I also want to say that I often bring cakes into this office, and they know that my cakes are pretty ANd tasty, so I wan't at all offended by her not cutting it quickly!

It's happened to me too. My back-to-school cake sat on the table all night, no one would touch it. I ended up taking it to our church nursery the next morning, the kids certainly didn't hesitate!

I am the "official" cake decorator for our small office. We always do birthdays on Monday mornings at our sales meeting. They always make me cut them because they say they can't bear to do it. icon_rolleyes.gif At least they eat it though.

However, I discovered last week that I didn't cut enough of my Hippo cake. I only cut into the water around the head and it took two days for someone to get brave enough to start in on his nose! icon_lol.gif I was out of the offce for those two days so I couldn't help them out by making the first cut.
