The last cake I made turned out ok but when I added wilton coloring in and stirred it, it acted like the color was separating. I kept stirring it to keep it mixed up but it would eventually separate a little. Anyone have any suggestions as to what i'm doing wrong? I am using the Wilton BC recipe.
Also when I have iced the cake, how do I get that smooth look?
what color are you trying to achieve? Are you using gel or paste? Im not sure why that might be happening that never happened to me before....there are several methods to smoothing a cake. One of the more popular ones is the "Paper towel Method" take a paper towel that will not leave specks behind I have found the best one for the job is the brand "Viva" when the frosting crusts over you lay the paper towel on the cake and gently rub your fingers over the paper towel to smooth out the frosting keep doing this until you have gotten the cake the way you like it. keep lifting the paper towel and checking that it is not sticking to your cake, if it is your frosting has not crusted enough wait a little longer and try again with a fresh papertowel. I hope this helped.
I also like the Viva method for smoothing, but I'm anxious to try the Melvira or paint roller method. There's a tutorial on this under articles.
As for the color, I've never had frosting separate, but I have had Wilton color act funky on me before. I've started buying Americolor online and I like it a LOT better.
