If you can give us a little more information about the cake, it'll be easier to answer your questions.

What size is the cake going to be? How many tiers, what size and shape? Buttercream or fondant on the outside?

How are you traveling (by car, plane, etc)?

There are lots of good recipes here, what type are you looking for (traditional "wedding flavor", or something different)?

Laura.

If it's a stacked cake you'll need to use dowels under each tier and then put one long dowel through the middle of the entire stacked cake. I personally would travel with them separate and then stack when you get there.

If it were me, I'd be nervous traveling with a stacked cake. I had a stacked cake disaster (2 tiers) and I didn't put the middle dowel in...my top cake slid right off and broke the bottom cake.

I may be way off on this, but when you ask about spikeing a cake, are you talking about dowelling the layers of the cake or spikeing the cake with alcohol? If it is alcohol, I suggest RUM! icon_biggrin.gif

Are you wanting to "spike" the cake with alcohol or "spike" the cake with a dowel rod to hold it together?

No, but you still want dowels in each tier to support your other tiers.

I love the Wilton hidden pillars & you don't have to do anything else.
