I'm fairly new at this, so I'm sure this is a silly question but I need to ask before I attempt a tiered cake.
Where do you buy dowels from? I purchased 1/4 inch dowels from the True Value Hardware store (they are birch) and I was going to cut them down to the size I want (I will be making a 6,8,10 cake).
Is this the normal practise for purchasing dowels or do you need special ones from a craft store etc.?
Thanks!
I use both wooden and Wilton plastic dowels.
I have been told many times to use only oak dowels because they are the most sturdy.
I'd say that if you can easily bend the birch dowels without breaking them--you might want to go get oak or plastic.
You can buy packages of Wilton wood dowels at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, AC Moore, Wal-Mart, etc.

I took a "How to make a wedding cake" class from a local pastry chef, and I would have paid the entire cost of the class for this one brilliant tip. Use straws instead of dowels. They're structurally very strong, super easy to cut with scissors, very cheap. If you have an asian market around, look there for bubble tea straws--they're even more sturdy than normal straws. I've made a 5 tier stacked cake with this technique and it worked brilliantly.
