Practice For A Wedding Cake??? To Do Or Not To Do????

I have a wedding cake coming up in about 3 weeks. It is 3 tiers (6-10-14) woth crusting cream cheese icing. The theme is daisies!!
My question is....I am practicing my daisies (and asking lots of questions on CC) to perfect them.
But does everyone actually practice the whole cake? Do you make a small cake to practice or do you use a cake dummy or do you just practice details.
I hate to make a lot of cake...then I have to find someone to give it to so it won't go bad.
I don't own any cake dummies and wasn't sure if I wanted to buy them.
The cake is not an elaborate design. The bride either wants the sides to be smooth or a simple dot pattern. The edges of each layer will be covered with the daisies and a small pale green leaves. The only thing I'm not sure about is the exact placement of the daisies and how many I will need??
I am stressing myself because I'm worried that I should to a test run but I hate to waist a bunch of ingredients??? Should I do a test run or will I be ok????
why not try praacticing on the back of your pans? Just turn them over and ice as if they are cake. Then you can play with flower/dot placement, practice your border, etc. without having to go out and buy a dummy or make lots of cake (although I would probably make at least one cake in the flavors you plan to use to make sure they taste good together if you've never used them in this combination before).
I'm jealous of you! I'm SSOOOOO in the mood to make a REALLY BIG CAKE!! but have no occasion for one!!
I looked at your work and it is great! I would not do a practice cake unless it was one tier. Just make sure to make extra daisies. When I make Royal icing flowers (which I hate to do), I make a TON of them and keep them in a plastic box until I need some another time. They keep awhile. You can do this!!
I have not done a lot of wedding cakes, so for me, I like to make a small preactice cake to see how things are going to work out first. I usually give it to the bride so she can see my work also. (I just add the cost of that little cake into the total for the wedding cake) I know a lot of seasoned wedding cake decorators do not do this, but it gives me peace of mind.
