How often do you make up a dummy cake before you make the actual one? And, what do you use as a dummy? Where can I get one? I have a cake I really want to try out first!

Thanks!

I saw a thread about buying dummies (I believe they are a styrofoam product) and I think there is a place in Texas that the folks here like. I can't answer the other question. Maybe someone more experienced with them will be able to answer that.

And to answer your original question, if you mean doing a dummy cake as 'practice' before the real cake, I've never done that. I've made dummy cakes for display purposes.

When I'm working with GP, which is most of my cakes, I mock them up for every cake. I don't cover the dummies, but I do place all of my flowers, shells, etc. on the dummy. Once the real cake is done, I transfer everything from the dummy to the real cake. If I'm not doing GP, I draw the cake first.
