A lady I know called me tonight and wants a wedding cake.

#1 This is my 1st wedding cake
#2 She wants it by Friday night icon_cry.gif
#3 She has no idea what she wants

The cake is for her daughter and they want it very simple but pretty.
They want 3 tiers but other than that I have to come up with something on my own....... so that is where my good friends at CC come in!! icon_lol.gif

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!

simple fondant-covered stacked tiers either round or square.

ribbon around bottom of each tier to match her "color" for wedding.

could do bow for topper or use one she provides.

just one of MANY examples in galleries:

My favorite is basketweave, I just think it is so pretty. You could do just dots, with fresh flowers on the cake.

I completely agree with Doug. Simplicity will be best (especially for your first-WOOHOO!!!) That will look very elegant and still have a touch of "her" color or topper.

Edited to say I LOVE basketweave too, if you don't like working with fondant!

oh PUHleeeze...that cute little pink two-tier cake in your photos more than attests to your ability to do a simple, elegant wedding cake...

it's just cake same as a b-day cake.

it's just fondant same as a b-day cake..

it's just that we call it a wedding cake ---

and get to charge LOTS more !!!! icon_rolleyes.gifthumbs_up.gif

you'll do just fine...after all -- only one color --and an easy one at that -- to deal w/ --- white!

have fun and don't forget the pics!

If you don't want to mess with fondant, do a BC with drop strings and bead borders! Easy! I think those are very elegant! Perhaps fresh/silk flower accents! She can't complain since she left it up to you. Check out the gallery for simple, yet elegant, designs.

I just took a minute to look at your photo's and you can do this. Your bithday cake you made is just like a wedding cake just add a teir and not color just white and you got it. We have faith in you. Just look at what you have put out and see you can do this.

Yes, you can do this!! I did my first this summer when it was 100+ and it was buttercream! You can do it!! You will do fine - not that you won't stress a time or two, but it will be beautiful! Then you'll have one behind you and know you can!!

pricing for wedding cakes, traditionally, is per serving.

so, depending upon size you make/she needs...

example: 50 servings at $1.50/each = $75 and up from there.

$1.50/each is at LOW end and usually fondant is MORE than BC as much as $1/serving.

so....could do say $2.50/serving or even $3 if your area will allow that much times the number of servings.

Ok How many servings is a 10,8 and 6 but the 6 will be for the couple to take home?!

You definitely can do this!!! I have been to many, many weddings in your town and I think either the simple fondant/ribbon or a basketweave would be great. Just remember that you will have to buy/make your fondant if you don't have it on hand, etc. versus just making the buttercream. It all just depends on how much time you have with such short notice.

I have left a message with one of my aunts in your town to see if she nows the "going rate" for wedding cake there.

Ok I called Wal-Mart to see how much they charge and they said $138 so do you think I could at least get $100 for mine??

An 8 & 10 will get you 62 servings on the wilton chart (make sure the person who cuts it knows the chart or you won't get the right amount of servings. I usually knock at least 5 off the wilton chart just to be on the safer side. How many people do you need to feed?

As far as pricing:
You can not and do not want to compete with Wal-mart prices. It's apples and oranges. You are making a fresh, homemade cake. Wal-mart is making a mass produced, been frozen for who knows how long cake. Check with a bakery in your area that will give you a better idea of what prices are for a quality cake and most places wouldn't even take an order this late with out a crazy short notice fee!

What the Heck?!?!?

Is your's going to be fondant covered?

Is your's home made?

Did they go to you on EXTREMELY SHORT NOTICE????

I would experience or not with wedding cakes, they obviously knew you could do it, I would charge double ....just for the time factor alone!

"expediting charge" lol...no, but for real

Please, don't undersell yourself because you may not be a "real" or "official" bakery.

You could do a stacked cake iced in buttercream with simple scrollwork either pre-pressed with a press or free-handed. Scrollwork is always simple, yet elegant (and easy). If you wanted a touch of color, make the scrollwork in lilac.

Good luck with your first wedding cake.....please post pictures!

Southerncake I told her $100 because she does tell people about me and I do get orders from her and people she knows. I did tell her that this price was for her only and I should charge double that since it was on such short notice. She was very happy to hear that!

I have this cake stand that my sister used at her wedding.... it is suppose to be single use but I didn't see anything wrong with using it again. I also told her I wanted this back!
I am attaching a picture of the cake stand!

You'll do a great job! I don't see why you can't re-use that cake stand - looks pretty sturdy to me. Since you are using it, you won't have to stack the tiers, unless you want to.

Tell DH to go butt a stump!
Note to self: Thank God for my wonderful DH!
