can anyone give me any pointers, tips , instructions or point me toward a tutorial on how to do a cake decorated like an open box ???? please???

You can see both open or closed boxes on this site. Here is a picture of a round box and if you want to make it square it is the cake that changes shape. If you want the lid to be from cake I would take a very light cake slice or make the lid out of pastillage.

You may want a stamped pattern on the sides of the box or stripes painted on fondant or stripes piped with different coloured icing, appliqued flowers or abstract shapes.......
