I'm making a replica of Arrowhead football stadium in Kansas City for a birthday on August 10th. I've attached a picture. I NEED your advice. How would you go about this?

I'm thinking of using a 12" cake for the base and football field. After studying this picture, I've thought it would probably work best if I actually made the stadium/seats out of pastillage to sit on top of the cake. There would be a cut-out part for the football field. I'd cut the top layer of the cake down to form the field and angle the sides up to help support the pastillage seating. I'd also make all the walkways out of pastillage. I need to figure out some way to insert the walkways into the sides of the cake a little bit for some added support. As you can see, there are support poles all around the stadium, so I thought I could use cookie sticks cut to fit to provide the main support for the stadium and walkways.

Do you think this would work? Do you think it could travel 2 hours?

Thanks for taking the time to look at my project and share your thoughts.

Karen

first reaction --- OVERKILL on the seats!

unless this cake is going to be oh about 10ft square --- DON'T

even duff didn't when he made his Wrigley Field cake.

tiny, multicolored dots of icing or sprinkles or jimmies or quins can be the people in the seats.

consider making the filed be the actual cakeboard showing through and it's covered in fondant.

for sides -- just cut a big slab of cake on the diagonal top to bottom -- one cut = two sides (will have to flip one over)

and yes the lollipop sticks will work for sides.

could do little round cakes (like baked in soup can) for the pedestrian ramps and then ice.

Thanks, Doug, for advice. I wasn't planning on making actual seats, just a base on which I can pipe dots for people.

I thought about making the field on the cake board and using cake to form the stands. Would you explain a little more about "cut a big slab of cake on the diagonal top to bottom?" Did you mean -- cake on counter, cut from top left down to bottom right, flip right side over?" Would I need to make another cake for the other two sides?

I really like your idea about little round cakes for the walks. I have 4" pans I could use. That would be much more stable than gumpaste or pastillage.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

yes... and yes

catty-corner is what they call it where I grew up. and yes to second cake (2 cakes = 4 sides)

and on seats -- by the time you pipe all those little dots (i vote sprinkles!) -- who's really going to notice the little ledges?

OMG Good luck with this one!!! What a project. I have seen a few stadiums in the gallery posts. They have used m&m's and those fruit kids cereal for the seats. Might be easier then piping. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Just had to add that we call it kitty-corner but catty corner makes more sense if you think about groups of women sitting on the corner gossiping and being "catty"! icon_lol.gif

Something you might consider for the stadium seats and that gives you some flexibility is doing it out of foam. Then you can cut it to shape and cover with fondant. It would help with the weight of the cake. Something I thought of when doing a baseball field was to use M&Ms or Skittles for the people. Very colorful and edible to boot. Good luck, it looks like a huge undertaking! Oh, and I'm a big fan of using dyed sweetened coconut for grass. Easy to pulse the coconut in my small quisinart to get it to a finer consistency and then put it into a zip top bag and add liquid green food coloring. Plus it smells so nice on the finished product.

Hi =)
I made a football stadium groom's cake for a couple that got engaged at the Auburn/Al game. http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_87667.html It's not perfect, but they loved it and it was fun to make! I styalized a lot and used sprinkles for people and cookies for the balconies and walkways. The field and entry out of fondant. I carved it out of four 9 x 13 cakes. It took me almost 50 hours altogether.
You can do it =) Just plan ahead.
