Hello my fellow CCers. I have a cake due at the end of September where I will need to do a fbct of the superman shield. I have never done a fbct and am curious if there is anything that will be helpful for doing it,. I plan to do a practice run to see how it goes. If I can't get it to work out then I will either do a candy plaque or color flow.

Thanks,
Randi

I just did my first practice fbct today. I did a search under the forums tab, typed in fbct, and a lot of previous posts with questions and tips came up. I followed the directions in the "how to" article on CC. It turned out pretty good...and I didn't use the "buttery" bc recipe it recommended. I just used some BC I had previously made...just b/c I was just practicing.

It was really easy. On one of the posts...I think it was titled "Buttercream Transfers????" someone put a link to a help/tutorial post on baking911 that has some great tips too.

Good luck!

I like to use a medium sized upside down cookie sheet for my workstation. I print the reverse image I want to use (the shield) and tape it to my cookie sheet. I then cover that with waxed paper and tape it down. I use Wilton Black in the tube most often for outlining with a #2 or #3 tip, depending on how intricate the details. I let that set up for a few minutes. I then fill in with colored BC-almost using the colorflow technique-burying the end of my tip so I don't get many squiggly lines. After I'm finished, I let it sit to crust, then push down gently to get all the frosting level. Then, I stick it in the freezer.

In the meantime, I get my cake ready, sometimes even completing the bottom border (I know, it's a no-no, but a time saver!!!) The FBCT has to be in the freezer at least an hour! When it's ready, I quickly cut the tape holding the waxed paper, but hold onto it still on the cookie sheet and flip the whole thing over onto the cake. You DO have time to pick it up and move ONCE before it would stick. Carefully peel off the waxed paper and finish!

I LOVE these!! I love how the BC looks somewhat shiny when you're done and if there are any imperfections, you can still use a Viva to smooth them out. The cake seems to decorate itself then! (HAHA)

Make sure you use a REVERSE IMAGE, or your shield will have a backwards "S". Not cool for Superman! These are actually quite easy and fun!
