I am very new to this and other than doing a few family member's cakes and reading every single book and website around, I haven't had much experience!!

I have my first order and I am soo nervous that it will be a disaster.......

I am making a birthday cake to serve around 50 people roughly.....I know I want to make a stacked/tier cake and the dimensions were to be 10,8,6 inch round 4" stacked cakes. Will that be enough?? I am pretty sure it will....I know they will use bigger than suggested serving sizes though.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!![/img]

Hi, and welcome. I think the cakes you mentioned will be enough. You might issue them a general guideline about how to cut them unless you will be doing that yourself.

Don't forget to dowel your cakes, and I usually cover my cardboard rounds with contact paper so they don't get soggy. Oh, and Have Fun!

Don't forget to post pictures when you are finished!

Wow! Congratulations! I bet you are so excited. Just to make things go more smoothly when the time comes I would do a practice mini cake or something. Just to fine tune all the little techniques like stacking. A 6,8, and 10" cake should serve 74 people according to Wilton. But, that's pieces cut to 1x2 inches. So, I think what you have planned should be great. I hope everything goes ok for you. Here's a link you can look at for figuring out number of servings and how much batter and icing to use. http://www.wilton.com/cake/cakeprep/baking/times/wedding_2inch.cfm

By my chart your cake will serve 44, but then I like to quote generous pieces for parties (but then I'm a greedy pig icon_rolleyes.gificon_lol.gif !), so it should stretch to 50 just fine - good luck!

Thanks everybody....You know we are always so critical of ourselves!! The funniest things I see wrong are that it's crooked because I cut my dowels and they were not all the same size. And then I used the Wilton thing to write on the cake because my writing is terrible! And you can see the lines from the thing where I pushed too hard, LOL!! But, you know we all learn from our mistakes!!

I forgot about the details of the cake:
12' cake was chocolate fudge
10' cake was french vanilla
8' cake was peanut butter
all was iced in buttercream and some accents were in rolled buttercream.
The pink shoes around the bottom tier are chocolate melts from a mold and the only non edibles are those plastic shoes that I bought from a bakery supply store.
