i want to try decorating cookies for halloween and i've been searching but i would like to know for those of you who have done antonia74 royal icing how did it turn out, were the cookies really hard, did the icing get rock hard. i've done flowers with royal and i find them too hard. is the cookie like that? i'm planning to do the no fail sugar cookies did you find that the cookie was overly sweet with the royal? sorry for all the questions but i want these to come out nice. thanks
I've been doing the NoFail cookies with Antonia's icing since the beginning of the year. Everybody who has tried them just loves them, and they look nice too. I'm even starting to get repeat orders from a few customers, finally.
The icing does not get hard like royal icing flowers. There's been speculation that it's the butter in the cookies that keeps it from hardening, but whatever the reason, it has the perfect texture. Firm enough to hold together, but soft enough to take a bite without any excess effort! ![]()
The NoFail cookies aren't too sweet on their own, so they're perfect with the icing, which is sweet. I've started adding a bit of lemon extract to my icing, and find that helps to fool my mouth into thinking the icing is a bit less sweet, but it's fine either way.
Make up a half batch to start, and a batch of cookies, and just play with it to get a feel for what's involved. The cookies will taste great, and you can see for yourself what it takes to get the look you're after.
You can give your "sample" cookies to friends to possibly generate orders, also, if you want to . . .
hth!
Laura.
