i'd say that an 8 inch would serve 15 people fine as long as you dont want huge peices. It depends on where you look, some places say it serves 12 and some say 20. I'd probably go with the 12-15 servings for an 8 inch.

I'd use it as an excuse to invest in some new pans
! I say to my customers that a 2 layer 8in round is 12 party servings. 9in I say is 16 servings. 9in pans are great to have as many cake recipes/cake mixes use that size as their basis. Hope that helps!
