i always have these great cake ideas that involve making fondant figures..then i realize that i cant DO fondant figures! here is my latest delima.

im doing a b-day cake next weekend, and the girl wants a roller skating theme. mom wants a two tiered stacked cake, which rules out a FBCT. so i was thinking about making a roller skate out of fondant for the top of the cake..then there is that whole cant DO fondant modeling! would it work if i traced the outline of a skate onto styrofoam and then covered it with mmf? any other ideas for a skate themed cake?

and if you dont believe i cant model..look at these lovelies:

how about some small (about 2" high) roller skates out of fondant around the cake, with a disco ball (fondant ball painted with shimmer dust or a ball cake covered in fondant still painted with shimmer dust) at the top. You could also pipe some musical notes around the cake and maybe put a record or two (out of gumpaste) on there too. Oh, and add some curling ribbon for a final touch.

I like the idea of putting little roller skates around the cake. You could either find a pic of a roller skate the size you want or sketch one out yourself and kinda like a FBCT, cut it out and use it as a stencil to cut out more skates from rolled out fondant. Then finally go back and pipe on your details. I've done several cakes like this as I'm not sooo good with the FBCT. Check these out. Hope this helps.

Have you seen the rollerblade cake by Allison? (cakesbyallison) They are 2-dimensional out of fondant so no sculpting involved. Would just be a matter of finding a template for your shoe on the net; cutting it out and attaching round wheels, pipe some details.

what about doing a chocolate transfer instead of an fbct so it could stand up on top of the cake? just an idea.

if you aren't covering the cake w/ fondant you could do an FBCT on the sides of the cake...... I know i've seen others here do that. Or see if you can find some plastic skates to stick on there (yeah I know I hate the plastic decorations too but if all else fails....) . I don't think your skates have to be 2 dimensional though - they could just be flat against the sides of the cake..... and you could do two choc. transfers to stand up on the top of the cake - or put a bow or something..... have you searched the gallery for ideas? I always go there first! icon_smile.gif

Or how about finding a picture of the rollerskate(s) and then fill them in with color flow or royal icing, then let them dry and just stick them on the cake!! Viola!
