Just wondering if anybody has any really good hiccup remedies. My 81 year old stepfather gets them frequently and keeps them sometimes for weeks. They have tested and tested, and cannot find any particular cause for them, nor any solution to stop them. He has tried just about everything anybody suggests, but maybe there is a new idea somewhere here on CC.

This time he has had them for two weeks, nonstop, and is very weary of them. Thanks. Janice

Wow! That's a long time to have the hiccups!

Has he got a 2nd (or 3rd) opinion? Have you searched the web?

Good luck! I hope they'll stop soon.

Thanks, mmdd! Last time he had them I did a search and found a product that said would stop them so I sent him some, but it didn't work.

Every time he gets them, which is at least two or three times a year, they do tests (not always the same doctor) and he has even been in the hospital with them with no real solution. Of course, they live in East Texas near Tyler, and sometimes I can't help wondering if something could be done here in the DFW area, but getting them here is another problem. Janice

I have tried this and it works for me, but whether it works for him or not...

There are pressure points behind your ears. Apply medium pressure with your index fingers to the hollow area behind each ear for a minute or so. By this time it will usually hurt a little bit. But the hiccups should be gone.

I have always been told to take your mind off of it and it will go away. Like the PP posted that to put the pressure behind the ears, well basically that takes your mind off the hiccups and puts your mind to the pain behind your ears. Or during track & field season when the kids get cramps I hear the coach tell the kids to pinch their bottom lip because it reverts the pain to the lip and not the leg..LOL

Whenever my kids get hiccups I always say to them, "Have you ever seen a pink elephant?" They stop and think about if they have ever seen a pink elephant and the hiccups are gone..HAHAHA

I don't know why it works but it has every time...I am not sure this would work on an 81 year old man, and in fact you might get something thrown at you because and 81 yr old man knows that elephants aren't PINK.... icon_biggrin.gif

Along the same lines the thing I have always found to work is to ask the person with the hiccups to get ME a drink of water. By the time they get the glass, water, and watch me drink it. The hiccups are gone. They are to busy wondering why I am the one drinking the water. icon_lol.gif

When I worked in the ED (I'm an RN), we treated hiccups that had persisted for an extended period of time with an injectable medication called Haldol. Have they tried this?

This has always worked for me & everyone else. MUST HAVE someone with you!!

(all at the same time) Hold your nose, drink water fairly fast & have someone else hold your ears. Do this for as long as you can.

Its a little painful when the hiccup starts but they will be gone!!

Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate that you took the time to post them!

I don't know, but don't think they have actually given him any "drugs" as such, but the Haldol sounds like a good possibility. This is an 81 year old who doesn't stop for much, he is always busy, but these hiccups do slow him down! I will suggest this to him and my mother, as well as the other ideas!

Wow, in that article from the link, one man had hiccups for 68 years, so I guess it definitely doesn't kill you! Thanks again. Janice

hiccups are the worst!!! I get them sometimes for 2hrs at a time.. it especially sucks when my job consists of answering the phones and transferring calls... and not they aren't cute little hiccups, they make my whole body shake and I eventually get a headache. AND if I get them during the day, I usually get them again before the night's over... It sucks totally

Hi again! I just talked with my DB and he says the hiccups finally have stopped on their own...so thanks again for your help. I definitely will save your suggestions for the next go 'round with them.

Husband got a bad case of these in the hospital last year .. the doctor had him take Benadryl .. i had never heard of that being good for it but it worked !!!
The home remedy that works for me is a teaspoon of sugar drizzled down the throat ..

I'm not sure about hiccups over a long period of time like that, but the trick I always used was to fill a cup of water to the brim and try to bend over it and sip from the side farthest from where you would normally drink. I know it's odd but it works!

Here is the quickest one that I have found that works. It worked for an over 60 man who had the hiccups for 1 month. He was told to go eat a pickle making sure to suck the juice. It worked for him and works for us.

This has NEVER FAILED in the 10 years that I have been advising this:
Take a cup of water and have the person take a deep breath, take a mouthful of water (still holding breath) and swallow just a little water at a time. By the time they are done with that mouthful of water-hiccups will be gone!

Plug your ears with your fingers and drink water from a glass. My DH usually holds the glass for me, but if he isn't around, I use a straw. works EVERY TIME!!!!! Good luck!!!
