Has anyone ever done a FBCT on the side of a cake?

I'm due to make a castle cake this week. The cake will be 2 layers 9" square cake with buttercream icing. I plan is to scatter stones/bricks around the sides of the cake, as well as a door and a few windows. While considering my options, I thought that doing the stones, door, windows as a FBCT might be a nice effect b/c these accents will have a "smooth" look with FBCT rather than piping these accents onto the side of the cake.

My question -- have any of you done FBCT on the sides of a cake? any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't see that there should be a problem since these accents are small in size, but not sure what challenges I might face since I've never done this before.

Thanks folks!

I did this one time and it was a complete disaster! I don't know why, but it bled all over icon_cry.gif Never noticed condensation when the FBCT was on top of a cake, but when I tried it on the sides it was bad, bad, bad!
Coulda been something I did wrong, as I rarely use FBCTs...just thought I'd letcha know!

I made a little castle recently and piped on the windows, then flattened the uneven bits with a finger dipped in cornstarch. It was okay but not great at all. Next time I will just cut them out of fondant and stick them on icon_smile.gif

ooo... thanks for the input. I might to reconsider putting FBCT on the side then. Basically, I wanted to go for the fondant look, but didnt' want to use fondant for these little accents. Gosh, I wouldn't think that putting FCBT on the side would be any different than putting it on the top of the cake. My thinking is that it should be OK b/c the FCBT pieces are going to be small. I guess I'll plan for a "plan B" if this doesn't work.

Here is my FBCT's on the side of a cake

It was easy to do froze them for a couple of days then put them on. I had to move quickly as it was very humid that night & the softened quite quickly. I also put a little more buttercream as a glue on it. They stayed on just fine. I also put some on a curved surface of a football you just have to put the FBCT on and then place the whole cake in the freezer.

Good luck in finding what works for you.

I did some side decorations using candy melts and it worked just fine. The only thing I made a mistake with was not making sure the wax paper was firmly taped b/c the edges of the pieces curled a little.

I did checkered flags fbct on the side of my racetrack cake.......and it worked perfectly......I think it works just fine with smaller items.......I think it's when you try to do a large piece and trying to put it on something round when it's flat without breaking it is hard.........it's definitely possible to them though when they're small like you're talking!!!! Go for it!!!!

Hmm, sounds like other paople have had success with it! Mine were pretty big, probably hand-sized, maybe that's why they bled. Good luck with whatever you do!

thank you all for sharing your experiences! I'm going to continue with my plan and make the little accent pieces in FBCT and stick 'em on my cake. My backup plan will be to use MMF (which I've never done, but I'm going to make a batch ahead of time and experiment).

Thanks again for sharing!
