I am a newbie and I have only taken 1 wilton class and could not make a rose to save my life. You guys are so good at this. I don't think that I can ever do what you guys do. Kinda makes me feel bad about my cakes. How did you all get so good?

I too could not make a rose to save my life. Until you really get it down, take a different route.

Practice, practice, practice!!

When I first started I would end up with a big blob that was supposed to be a rose. One day (after many failed attempts) a beautiful rose appeared. It will come.

Don't feel bad, I can make roses but I can't make a simple swirl flower to save my life.

I am new to this also - I am currently in the middle of the third Wilton course - all taken back to back - so that means what about 10 weeks? I still have a hard time with roses also - mine tend to slide off the nail before I can finish icon_cry.gif but - I have gotten some better at it. It does take practice, practice, practice and more practice! Try taking course two - there are other flowers you learn and I find them easier than roses! Good luck and happy decorating icon_biggrin.gif

Don't feel bad at all. Anything takes time and practice. You're already a step ahead of me with the Wilton class. I've not taken any classes. Any experience I have comes from the detailed woodburing I used to do. I've had a nerve injury and can't fully us my right (dominant) hand but hope to make a full recovery and start decorating again. Keep your chin up and whatever you do, don't give up. Come here and ask for help. This is a great big family here.

roses? who needs roses ? icon_confused.gif ....i cant do em' either.

just find what iterests you. seriously, your style doesnt have to mimic what you see in class or what the average joe expects it to be like. find what you like, and read books, and of course...practice!

i've been at this for a year. self taught. i cant make roses, but i dont think i've done so bad. icon_smile.gif

I can't make decent looking roses on a flower nail, but I can make really nice ones on a sharpened dowel. I learned to do them that way many years ago.
There is a tutorial on the articles tab - "Making Buttercream Roses on a Stick" I lift my roses off the stick with the Wilton lifter that looks like scissors. (I did use scissors till I found the Wilton item)
And practice.
