Delivering A Two-Tier Cake?

Please advise! I plan to make a two-tier cake for a customer, but I don't usually deliver. The party is very near my home so it's not the end of the world if I bring it to them - but how do I transport it? If they pick it up should I trust that the top tier wouldn't slide off the bottom tier? I can't expect them to assemble it when they get there. If I deliver it, I'd like to have it intact so I don't have to assemble it either. What should I do? Thanks in advance!

You can deliver it already stacked, just make sure you dowel it well, and use a dowel through the center of both cakes.

I agree that if you use dowels to support the top layer and then drive a dowel through both layers and then pound the dowel into the cake cardboard of the bottom layer it should not move. I have an electric pencil sharpener that I use only for wooden dowel rods. I sharpen the edge of the dowel that goes into the cake. It makes it much easier to get it to go through the cake cardboards and stick into the bottom layer of cardboard.

What a smart idea, to sharpen the end of the dowel rod. Thank you both - I'm a little nervous about delivering, but I'd be even more nervous handing the cake over to them and then the cake toppling over on them!

You may want to let your customer know that there is a dowel rod through both layers. This is always good to know when you are trying to take the layers apart for cutting. icon_rolleyes.gif

Definitely! I always let them know how the cake was assembled so they can expect to find sticks running through the cake! icon_smile.gif Thanks for all your help!!
