I really messed up. I was trying to make red buttercream and I got it, but wanted it a bit darker so I added some black...well now instead of red I have a beautiful burgundy/wine color but it is not red! Is it possible to fix my mistake or should I just start over? Please help and thank you so much.
you might try mixing in pure white BC -- but, due to the black very doubtful it will ever be true red.
soooo....... since you'd have to make a new batch anyway...
and red "develops" over time -- what doesn't look dark enough today usually is darker by tomorrow
best w/ colors like this to make a day ahead.
Thanks so much. I really don't need it until Friday so I still have time to get it right. I do need red for something else anyway so I think I will go ahead and make a new batch in the morning. Now to figure out what to use this burgundy color for???? HMMM....sounds like maybe a cake just for me, no probably not a good idea! LOL
I have to tell you - I made this same mistake, but mine was a bit worse. I was making a 6" cake for my Best Friend's wedding. We wanted to try the recipe and design before the real go. So, my Wilton 1 instructor had said to had a drop of black to deepen the red. Well, my nearly red frostig turned milk chocolate brown with ONE drop!!! My best friend's sample cake had brown roses on it! LOL Good thing we could all laugh about it and we learned with teh practice cake, but I was SOOOOO mad at my wilton instructor. I've since learned that she was full of something...not nice. She gave us LOTS of bad advice - between that and her not showing up for the last class, I don't have a lot of nice things to say! LOL

What red are you using? Doug is right it will be darker the day after. Even darker still if out of a bag.
To get a dark red I use the no taste red, and a little super red, it does take a lot to get a deep red though. You can add a little chocolate too and this will help darken it also.

Thanks Kat. I am using no taste red. I actually had almost the color I was looking for, just messed it up by adding black. I have done a very deep red a few weeks ago and started with chocolate for that. For this one, my son is wanting a "Darth Maul" cake so I was trying for a blood red color. Anyway, I will try again today and since I had almost the color once, I think I can recreate that (just will leave it at that this time).

I prefer to airbrish my frosting red, it always turns out a very nice shade of red. But you can also add the airbrush liquid to frosting and get a really nice red with no problems.
Airbrush...I really need to invest in one of those. Soon I hope.
Well, I did get the color and I should have pictures of the cake by tomorrow night. Thank you all for all the help and great ideas.
