It depends on the brand. I will not buy Wilton! I really like MMF plus it is very inexpensive and you can easily flavor/color it before adding the sugar. But, I also really like working with Satin Ice. It's much more costly than making MMF though.

I have made MMF and love the taste and how easy it is to work with. I recently made Toba Garrett's fondant recipe (just wanted to try something new) and really liked the taste, but found that it ripped and tore REALLY easily. Wilton is yucky. I have heard choco pan is really good tasting too.

My fav is Toba Garrett's recipe. Easy and quick to make. Don't care for mmf , but it would do in a pinch. Wilton's is disgusting...won't use it.

I have not made homemade fondant, but I've used both Wilton and Satin Ice. The Satin Ice is delicious, and although obscenely expensive, it seems to me that it's easier to pick up a bucket of it at my local cake supply store than to make my own. (I have a full time job, a husband, and a toddler on top of this cake hobby....)

The Wilton is awful; texturewise it is gritty and dry, and the taste is just not worth mentioning. I've used it a few times and won't ever waste my money on it again....

Satin Ice is another story altogether. It comes in vanilla and chocolate, and the vanilla flavor comes in white and pre-colored. It has a great texture and saves very well. I haven't had the problems with it drying out that I had with Wilton.

Lots of CC users swear by the MMF, and if I ever get a free afternoon, I'm going to make up a batch and try it out.

Good luck to you!

I much prefer the MMF vs. the Wilton fondant. I used the Wilton fondant in my Wilton course 3 & I thought it dried out very fast and the taste was less than desireable!!! I think the MMF taste 10 times better. And MMF is cheaper. It's a little more work but worth the effort. icon_lol.gif

Wilton's is disgusting and tastes like plastic, although its handy if you just want to practice.

MMF is yummy and cheap but I got really really sick of making it, it turned out different for me every time and got tempermental if you needed a dark color.

So I buy FondX now or Pettinice, and just pass the costs onto the buyer.

Yeah, it's unanimous...Wilton's Fondant is B A D !!! It has an awful artificial taste to it, and I really can't stand the texture! I didn't know about making your own fondant until i came here to CC. Thank goodness, i saw the recipe, tried it, and LOVE it! It tastes good, and I love the texture! I haven't tried Satin Ice, but heard it is really good. I will probably give it a try just to experience it, but know it is costly.
MMF is SOinexpensive to make, why try anything else!

I have yet to try MMF.

but LOVE satin ice. I will NEVER buy Wilton again!!

sdfgarcia.. not sure where you get it.. but I have ordered some online from both the bakers kitchen and also even ebay and get it for the same price as Wilton ($19.00 5lb white) and I think there is a site that has it for $16.50. (without shipping but I usually tie it in to buying other things at the same time to help with that.)

MMF is easy to make, inexpensive and the taste is pretty good. Wilton has absolutely no flavor in my opinion. I haven't tried Satin Ice or the others, but hope to in the future. Fondant covered cakes are pretty rare in my immediate area, except for weddings. I might just break the barrier one of these days and make a fondant covered cake just to see what kind of a response I get! lol

My favorite fondant is Massa Grischuna. I first discovered it a couple years ago when I took a class from Colette Peters. It's not cheap, but it's the best fondant I've ever worked with/tasted. Here's the link to the website that sells/makes it: http://www.auiswisscatalogue.com/store/merchant.mvc?page=ASC/PROD/1j_ENROBING/505023

lilscakes, I'm a newbie and have only used Wilton fondant for my class cakes. Its convenient but is very yucky.

What do you not like about MMF? I have not tried it yet.

Everyone,

other than taste, what are the differences in Wilton and MMF?

Thanks

MMF is a little bit softer than Wilton, and doesn't dry as much as the Wilton. I still use Wilton, but not on things I will eat. I use it for Bows and such that I need to dry hard, but don't want to use gumpaste. MMF never gets real hard...at least for me.

Also, MMF is sooooooooooooooooooo easy to make. You don't need an afternoon, just 10 minutes!
