Next time you'll need to put a tag on it (as if it's not bought yet) -- on one side, put the "maker's name" and the other side "DRY CLEAN ONLY!"

I'm lucky -- although my MIL used to make wedding cakes herself she has nothing but compliments for even my ugly cakes and won't even cut them when I bring them to family get togethers ... she can't bear to do it.

When I saw the picture I went straight to photoshop!
Hope this makes you smile icon_smile.gif

...and I totally understand MIL issues icon_rolleyes.gif

Not sure why the picture looks a bit blurry, looks great when I open it in IE. PM me if you'd like the original picture that isn't blurry.

next time you can steam the residue off, it works like a charm

Aside from being a little shiny, I think your cake turned out great! I love the color w/ the little white flowers! thumbs_up.gif

Aren't MIL's great! At my wedding mine told the cake server to go ahead and cut the top tier because we didn't want to save it anyway! icon_eek.gif
Luckily, she(the cake server) was wise enough to come up and ask me herself after my MIL told her that! icon_razz.gif

Your purse cake turned out beautiful, despite your MIL help. I always use powder sugar and like Doug said , it comes off easy with a brush.
Enjoy!!!!

Your cake is really good looking despite the MIL....

another reason to avoid cornstarch is that it dries your fondant/gumpaste out too much and can cause it to crack...

I am laughing so hard reading all of these posts! I would have died if someone had done that to my cake! I don't even let other people carry them to the car- I prefer to make all the trips myself!

I originally used powdered sugar to coat my work area, but I am a convert to shortening. Just a little bit evenly coating the area works wonders. The powdered sugar always dried my MMF out way too much- but I live in CO where it is very dry, so I'm sure that was a contributing factor!

I still love your cake, BTW. And I probably wouldn't have noticed the shine unless I was looking for it. I would have just blamed it on the flash- cameras do weird things to pictures! haha.

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif No I didn't yell at her. It was a very stressful day, I had to have her come over to watch my kids so I could do the cake and that's ALWAYS stressful the way it is! I was so tired by the time we had to get ready for the party I just said "whatever". Then I had a couple of drinks at the party and felt better! icon_lol.gif

icon_lol.gif The picture is so bad that you can't tell that the flowers are actually pink! icon_lol.gif And yes, MIL's are wonderful! icon_lol.gif

I was going to suggest you use Photoshop and the klone feature (I think that's what it's called anyway.. been a LONG tiem since I used Photoshop) to just buff out that shine, but kanaslaura did such a nice job already!! It really is a great cake and I would have BI**H slapped anyone who decided to try to come near it with a wet towel.. good intentions or not.. icon_wink.gif . I am sure her heart sank when she saw that it wasn't drying the way she thought it would.
