just a few questions....
do most fo you use cake boards or pieces of wood as the base of each tier???
Also when you are using a centre support for your cakes, do you just make a hole in each of the boards at the bottom of the tiers, then just feed the boards along the dowel with the cake already sitting on the boards??
i hope this make sense.
one more thing, is it possible to transport wedding cakes not already assembles using the Stree-free support system???
thanks
I use a cake board wrapped in glad press n seal...if it's a really heavy cake, I use a double board.
I don't "pre-hole" my boards, but some people do...it's just a matter of preference. As far as I know....you can't place the cake & board over the dowel....you need to put the dowel in after you've assembled the cake.
Sorry, I can'thelp you out on the stress free support system?
HTH!
What I am using depends on several factors. If it is a simple B-day cake and I am traveling with it, I will use cardboard cake circle between layers, and when finished stacking I will put a wooden dowel through the whole cake, pounding the dowel with a hammer so it goes through the cardboard.
For my daughters wedding cake (had to travel with it 90 miles already stacked) I used plastic separator plates, and had my husband drill holes in the middle of each plate. Then purchased the hidden dowels, cut them to size. I inserted the dowel in the middle before assembling the next layer up, pushed the second layer through the dowel. this system worked very well for me. it was very sturdy, and traveled well.
I am not familiar with the stress free system, but why would you want to use it if you are going to assemble on site?
Here is a link to the stree free support system:

So funny that I saw this thread tonight! I have been searching for stress free support systems on the web. I saw it in American Cake Decorating Magazine, and was VERY interested! I have a HUGE cake to make for a Bat Mitzvah in November, and wanted to look into these, but HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICES OF THESE THINGS??? The couple I saw were $150 for the set...or did I see it wrong? Soes anyone else know of a less expensive version of these? THe ones I saw in the magazine were by Cake Inc. No prices are available in the magazine, you have to phone in to get prices....but the ones on Earlines site were OUTRAGOUSLY expensive! Let me know if anyone knows of aless expensive version of these!
