I want to buy a cake decorating book. One that has some step by step instructions.

Any suggestions?

I started with just the Wilton year books. They have some really cute things in there and at the back, they have step by step instructions for some of the more complcated things and for the basics. That's really all I have right now. I am buying 2 of Debbie Brown's books and can't wait to see what I learn from there. You can learn a TON of things from the people here and the articles on this site also. That's where I've learned alot of my stuff from. It's almost like taking a class without paying for it!! icon_lol.gif Good luck and remember that you CC friends are here to help.

I would have to go back and check to see which of these books have detailed instructions, but my very most favorite books are:

Confetti Cakes (Elissa Strauss)
Pretty Party Cakes (Peggy Porschen)
Romantic Cakes (Peggy Porschen)
Celebrate with a Cake (Lindy Smith)
Cakes To Dream On (Colette Peters)
Fun and Fancy Cake Decorating (Kate Sullivan)

I am eagerly awaiting Lindy's new book, coming out next month. And I just read that Confetti Kids is coming out in 2008!

I wish I could buy every book! My favorites are "THE CAKE BIBILE" - Rose Levy Beranbaum & COLETTE's BIRTHDAY CAKES - Colette Peters. I've gleaned lots of ideas from these books! thumbs_up.gif

I didn't like Collette's Cakes to Dream on as much as her Birthday Cakes or Wedding Cakes books-her new one has short, basic descriptions, but her older ones have more complete pictures and descriptions of what to do and how to do it.

I like Debbie Brown's books too. She has quite a few. Were you looking for information on how to learn to do cake decorating or for ideas on different cakes to do? If you are just starting out and want to learn about the techniques I have a wilton book called Decorating Cakes (I think-it has a pretty pink cake on the front). It it basically an overview of all the wilton courses, plus a little and with quite a few cakes that it tells you how to make.

It may depend on what where you are in cake decorating. Are you just beginning or have been doing for awhile.

Toba Garrett has two books out -

Professional Cake Decorating (Hardcover) - good for everyone especially if you are just starting out.

The Well-Decorated Cake - great book too, maybe after you been decorating for awhile.

Wilton book are good too.

Depends are what you are looking to learn - fondant designs, 3D/scupltor cakes, gumpaste flowers. What is your style you want to learn.

I have not had a chance to purchase any books yet, but I have found some great ones to check out from my local library. And best all they are free! Then if there is a project or recipe that I want I just copy that page.
