Ok... I experienced a weird situation with the recent cake I made for a friend's wedding. I made the cake as part of her gift plus I really want to gain the experience. She was having about 150 people at the wedding. I was making a cake that would feed about 75-80 people and she was just going to order a sheet cake from a local grocery store to make up the difference. The wedding was a clam bake reception with a casual tropical theme. So, I made a hawaiian shirt cake. She absolutely loved it! Which made me happy. But.... she didn't cut the cake and serve it. She wouldn't let the staff cut it! I don't know how I feel about this. They served the store bought cake to all the guests and she took the cake I made HOME. LOL
I really wanted her to cut it but she said she didn't want to cut into it because it was too pretty. What?! Its a CAKE! ...meant to be eaten.
Was she afraid it wouldn't taste good? My DH and I ate the scraps and they were moist and delicious. I can't imagine what she did with a cake that feeds 75 people once she got home!

Ok, just venting about my weird situation. Thanks icon_smile.gif

Don't feel bad. She probably thought it was so pretty that she didn't want to cut it (ruin it) or share it...

I made a huge red and white fondant cake for 150 people this spring, and they never cut or served any of the whole thing!! They served the sheet cake with it that I also made, and the big cake went home with the groom's college friends... icon_eek.gificon_confused.gificon_surprised.gif !!!!!

I bet she truely loved it and wanted to prolong cutting it as long as possible. Hopefully she froze what she couldn't eat so it would not go to waste.

My daughter got married this past week end, and the cake cutters cut all the extra cakes first, and all that was left was the main cake, and it was un cut. So now I have to figure out what to do with a whole wedding cake. WIERD!

Too bad your friend didn't share the GOOD tasting cake with her guests, I can't imagine serving a grocery store sheet cake when you have a great tasting cake sitting there, you just made it look too pretty to cut. lol

Hi
I'm sure she didn't want to cut your beautiful cake. When I first started decorating, my DH wouldn't cut the cakes. When I asked him why, he told me "that's a looking at cake, not a cutting and eating cake." I told him it's temporary art, made to be eaten. That's why we take pictures!
I always make my friends that I make cakes for promise that they will eat the cake, otherwise I'm i'm not giving it to them, lol.

I think that always happens. When I first started, I was doing the "take the cake for the office pitch-in" thing all the time. I got so tired of hearing "it's too pretty to cut!" that I started saying, "Give ME the dang knife! I didn't spend all that time making it just to take it home!" icon_lol.gif

Did she maybe want to freeze it for the one year anniversary???

I don't know, maybe you should casually mention it to her.

I just started and my cakes are not that great, but my family still protests cutting the darn things...I want to see how my experiments come out...often its with new fillings or icing or ganache or something so I want it to get eaten! I guess its just a compliment.

I'll be the one to say that I've actually been that way before. I made an ultra yummy triple chocolate dessert once, and I couldn't cut the cake at all. I was forced to ask a friend to cut it for me icon_redface.gif

I'm sure she meant well, but I know how you feel! I made a 3-tiered cake for the Relay for Life this year and they wouldn't cut it. I thought "I swear to God, if I have to throw the whole thing out after all those hours of work..." icon_lol.gif

I saw the cake in your photos, fantastic job!!!

What a nice cmpliment! I'm sure she just didn't want to spoil your beautiful cake by cutting it. Funny how people think about those things sometimes. I on the other hand am like "ohhhkay, let's cut this baby and have us some cake!"I love good cake, what can I say. And I actually enjoy cutting the big ones. It's also a relief to know they're being cut right, after some butcher job's I've seen. I'd take the compliment as it was intended and not mention it to the bride and congrats on a job very well done!

We had a brunch at my parents home for our out of town guests the day after our wedding. Maybe they did something similar and decided to save it for that.

Carerator, I just looked at your hawaiian shirt cake yesterday and saved it to my favorites. It's great! I love the brush embroidery on it as well as the great colors and the leiu (sp)! I can understand her wanting to hang onto that cake a while longer. But seems funny that she didn't have you make two cakes if she was going to need one for later on. Just another thought as I've read back over the thread. Great cake. I need to find out how to do the embroidery!! Wow!
