The rope borders are pretty easy to do, but hard for me to think about how to explain it. I learned them by reading the Wilton Decorating Cakes Book and so far have only ventured to do them on the bottom of my cakes next to the cake board. I think there are two types of rope borders that can be done I am not sure off hand.
The best way I can think to describe how to do it is using a star or round tip and butter cream icing start off by making a sideways backwards S ~ going from left to right. Once you stop place your tip in the left arch part of the ~ and make another~. Continue this several times and you will create a rope border. If you look at my nurses week cake I know the picture isnt the best but you can see I did each ~ with 2 different colors. Hope this helps sorry I cant provide a better explanation at this point maybe one of the others can explain it better.

You can make your ropes out of fondant, MMF or gumpaste. I don't know how to explaion either. You make to long "snakes" LOL and swirl them together and just place on the border of your cake. You can also make a "braid" with three different colors and that looks nice too.
Hope that helps.
