I know there was a thread on this awhile ago but I can't find it. For those of you who have made your own or those of you who would like to, how do you go about making your own cake--I mean ideas. Yes, there are hundreds of ideas but how did you choose? Color, theme, copying a favorite photo/style/size? My husband said leave him the instructions and how-to's and he'd do it with our 18 month old--she will handprint the icing or something. icon_lol.gif

I'm not sure what to do....alot of ideas yet none stickin'! Ideas?? I wanted to try a topsy turvey but maybe not at this point....

You mean, like a cake for you? I just make whatever I *feel* like, a picture of a cake that inspires me or something I want to make but no one has ordered...

Make something you've been wanting to make but haven't been able to for whatever reason. I use my birthday to make girly stuff since I have two boys who hate barbies and flowers.

I make whatever I have been wanting to make and take a picture for my portfolio. I am realy into sculpted cakes, right now, so that was how I decided on the sea turtle cake. And I love turtles.

I think you should just pick a flavor you want and let your hubby do what he wants for you.......I'm sure it will be just adorable.......men are so funny that way! In any case......I would think that's kinda like picking out your own birthday present.....I think it's more fun just to allow someone else to get you what they think you want rather than what you actually want. I mean if you're making the cake, then by all means go with all your favorite things.......but if he's making it....I say give him the flavors you want and let him have the decorating freedom with your 18 month old!!

I think you should keep it simple (if he is anything like my DH). Make the icings for them, etc. Set out the pans for him. I would do a regular 9inch 3 layer cake. let them ice it together and spell out Happy Birthday mommy on it.

Thanks everyone! Maybe I will let hubby do his thing with the wee one and make my own small one just to practice a technique.

My birthday is coming up as well. I saw a cake in an old Wilton yearbook this weekend. They used the standing bear pan decorated as a woman with an apron on - she had a plastic decorator bag with a little icing and a tip in her hands. In front of her was a 6" cake. It looked like she was decorating the cake and it said "Happy Birthday to Me". It was really cute. I think my grandkids will get a kick out of it.
They've been wondering what I'm going to do for my birthday cake.
