My sister wants a 5-tier wedding cake for 100 guests, so I bought a cake dummie, but it's only 3" tall and I was planning on making the other tiers 4" tall. Is there a fix to this? Also, what pan sizes work best for a simple tiered cake with ribbon at each base? 6, 8, 10, 12, 14? Thanks!

Welcome to CC!

You can add height to the dummy by cutting a couple rounds of 1/2in foamcore and hot gluing them to the dummy. You can find foamcore at Michaels and sometimes Wal-mart but Michaels has it on sale at times and I think it's cheaper there too!

What size is you cake dummy? That way we can tell you what size cakes to make for 100 guests. Are you making the top tier real for them to keep for their anniversary?

I personally like at least a 3in or 4in difference between the tier sizes. A 6/9/12/15/18 combo would be impressive to say the least. Or to see what a 4in difference looks like, my sunflower wedding cake is a 6/10/14/18 combo.

What about making the whole cake dummy and kitchen cakes for the guests?

At my Michael's, in the floral section, you can buy 1" styrafoam discs in even-numbered sizes (6", 8", 10", 12", I think). That's actually how I made my first dummy cake, I used 4 taped together for each tier.

I'm with Dodi - I like at least 3" between tiers, and 4" is even better. An 18" 14", 10", 6" would look really, really impressive.

oh, D-UH... I feel so un-creative at times!

I've only bought the 14" dummy so far as that is all they had in stock at my local bulk barn. I do, however, have the 6, 10, and 14 pans.. so maybe I'll use an 18" dummie base and then real cake for the 6, 10, 14 and convince her to do a 4-tier instead! icon_lol.gif

She is undecided as to whether they will keep the top tier. I'm also making a 10" round "poker table" grooms cake.. will probably feed 30-ish. So, that combined with the wedding cake should feed approx 120 people, I'm thinking.

Thank you, both! That is VERY helpful... off to Michaels icon_smile.gif
