Hey everyone,
I need to make a 3-D Mercedes Benz' cake. I have no idea how to do it. I tried to carve it out of cake, but it didn't look like a car...lol!
Does anyone have any ideas or can anyone explain to me how to carve a car out of cake?
Thanks
1) create templates for carving -- one for side view & one for end-on view. easiest way....get good photo of car from side and end-on. blow up to need size, cut out shape of car from photo.
2) stack up layers of cake until have block big enough. Now attach use templates to cut cake. Suggest cut side view first. DO NOT remove cut cake parts yet. rather ensure attached w/ skewers and then use end-on template to carve that profile. NOW remove all cut cake (and use for cake balls) (you're doing the same technique used in woodworking to cut out a double profile on a single piece of wood)
3) now have basic profile of car.
4) cover in fondant as allows you to add detail lines right into it easily.
5) consulting your photos, add details to basic shape using any medium you feel comfortable with-- fondant, gumpaste, BC, royal. THIS is where the real work of making the car come alive is at -- all those little details and enhancements. Don't forget to use silver luster dust painted on to get chromed areas.

I am recently doing a 3d car cake for my son and I need a convertible car so I'm carving the cake, try starting with the 3D cruiser pan I could never carve a cake into a car, here's the picture of what the cake will look like right out of the pan. I used the Wilton 3D Cruiser Pan it sells for about $10 but it's worth it cause the possibilities are endless with this pan plus I have a son. Hope this helps if not post any questions and everyone will be happy to help you they helped me a ton when I was baking this cake.
Thanks everyone...This really helps a lot. I will post the cake when it is done...wish me luck LOL!
