I have been asked to "cater" for my sisters bunko group. She gets to host the first week of October and since I love Halloween I offered to make up some spooky foods and, of course, a cake. I want to make a 3D pumpkin using two bundt cakes and then put a black cat poking out of the top. (Kinda like the kitten in a basket in my photos only a pumpkin).

So my question is, how do I go about constructing the pumpkin? I have to build it hear and drive it to her house, not too far thankfully. Should I treat the cakes as seperate pieces on boards stacked with dowels and such or just stack them like a layer cake?
Thanks in advance for any advice and tips.

I'd just put BC between the two layers...and if concerned a few short dowels too, but those wont really be needed I think.

then ice it all over -- could even cover in MMF for an even smoother look.

When I made my pumpkin using bundt pans I did just connected the two together with icing. Mine didn't have to travel so I wasn't concerned with that part. If it would make you feel more comfortable you can always put some dowels or straws through it, but I don't see why it would have to have a board and supports seperating the two.

Hopefully this will reassure you... I made one with only BC in between and drove 40 miles with no problems. The first mile was on a very bumpy dirt road and I was worried but it didn't shift a bit. It was my first show cake and I was mostly worried because I had made the stem out of half a cut banana and I was afraid the icing was going to slide off of it. I didn't know about things like fondant and gumpaste back then!

Thank you all for your replies. I like to get my stressing over before the actual time for cake arrives. I think I'll use BC and maybe a dowel/straw just for added insurance. Thanks again icon_biggrin.gif
